Proposal for a smoking area in long-distance trains rejected as KAI prioritizes safety and comfort.
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a smoke-free environment on all train services after a DPR member proposed the return of a dedicated smoking carriage.
DPR’s Smoking Carriage Proposal
During a hearing with KAI on August 20, 2025, Nasim Khan of the National Awakening Party (PKB) suggested reintroducing a smoking carriage in long-distance trains. He argued that such a space could double as a café-style carriage, accommodating smokers during lengthy journeys. Nasim pointed to intercity buses, which often provide smoking areas, as a comparison.
KAI’s Firm Response
KAI swiftly dismissed the proposal. Vice President of Public Relations Anne Purba emphasized on August 21 that all trains remain smoke-free zones. “Until now, trains are free from cigarette smoke,” she told the media, stressing that passenger safety and comfort are the company’s top priorities.

Current No-Smoking Rules
KAI enforces strict regulations prohibiting smoking and vaping on trains. Passengers caught smoking or using e-cigarettes are removed at the next station stop. The policy applies universally across all services, covering tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and vape devices.
Safety and Comfort as Priorities
Anne noted that KAI continues to welcome feedback from passengers to improve services, but underscored that public health considerations outweigh convenience for smokers. “We prioritize safety, service, and overall passenger comfort,” she said.
Balancing Aspirations and Regulations
While Nasim Khan believes a smoking carriage could benefit smokers and generate revenue for KAI, the railway operator insists that maintaining a smoke-free environment is essential for the welfare of all passengers. The debate reflects broader tensions between accommodating individual preferences and upholding public health standards in Indonesia’s transportation sector.
KAI’s rejection of the smoking carriage proposal reaffirms its commitment to smoke-free travel, ensuring passenger health and safety remain paramount. For Indonesians and Singaporeans who frequently travel by train, the stance signals the growing prioritization of clean and comfortable public transport across the region.
