Suspect pretended to help recover stolen motorbike, demanded cash and ritual items from victim

Karimun police have arrested a man who stole a motorcycle and disguised himself as a shaman to deceive the victim, demanding money and ritual offerings before being exposed.

Theft in Sungai Lakam Barat

The incident occurred on Friday, August 15, 2025, when a resident of Gang Perdamaian, Sungai Lakam Barat, Karimun reported losing his Honda Scoopy motorcycle, license plate BP 2341 LK. The motorbike, parked in front of the victim’s house, was stolen because the key had been left in the ignition.

Fraudulent Shaman Modus

The suspect, identified as IK (29), who lived nearby, approached the victim claiming he could help find the missing motorcycle. Posing as a “dukun” or shaman, IK demanded Rp600,000 in cash, along with incense, cigarettes, and oranges as conditions for his so-called ritual. Suspicious of the demand, the victim reported the matter to Polres Karimun.

Police Action and Arrest

Responding quickly, a team led by Ipda Kevin William Christoper and supervised by Kasat Reskrim AKP Alfin Dwi Wahyudi apprehended the suspect. During questioning, IK admitted not only to stealing the motorbike but also to fabricating the shaman ruse to extort the victim.

Hidden Evidence Recovered

The suspect then guided police to the hiding place of the stolen vehicle in Teluk Lekop, Tebing District, where it had been concealed in bushes. The recovered motorbike was secured as evidence, and IK remains in police custody for further investigation.

Public Safety Reminder

Police urged residents to remain vigilant against vehicle theft and fraud. “We remind the public not to be careless when parking vehicles, ensure they are properly locked, and report any suspicious activity immediately,” AKP Alfin said.

The Karimun case highlights the evolving tactics of criminals who not only steal but also manipulate victims through deceit. Swift police action prevented further loss, serving as a warning for the community to be more alert in safeguarding property and resisting fraudulent schemes.
