30-year-old Rahman survives self-harm attempt after setting his home on fire in Kuala Maras village
Residents of Kuala Maras village in Indonesia’s Anambas Islands were shocked when Rahman, 30, allegedly suffering from depression, set fire to his house before attempting suicide by slashing his wrist.
Incident Unfolds in Telapan
Rahman, originally from Sulawesi and living in a plantation area of Telapan for the past year, allegedly poured kerosene and ignited his house before attempting to take his own life on 12 August 2025. Witnesses say he had been showing unusual behaviour in recent days, including sudden outbursts and reportedly killing his pet dog.
Swift Rescue Efforts
Local resident Zamri discovered Rahman in a weakened state with a deep wrist wound, believed to be from a sharp weapon. Zamri alerted the village head, subdistrict authorities, police, and military personnel. The evacuation team arrived by small boat and transported Rahman to the Jemaja Timur Community Health Centre for emergency treatment.

Known for Erratic Behaviour
According to villagers, Rahman was known to have occasional angry outbursts but had not previously posed a threat to others. Officials suspect his actions were driven by severe depression from prolonged separation from his family.
Police and Community Safeguards
Jemaja Police Chief AKP Aang Setiawan confirmed that officers are stationed at the health centre to prevent another suicide attempt. The police are still investigating the underlying motive for both the arson and the self-harm incident.
Plans for Repatriation
Kuala Maras Village Head Hendrika said that once Rahman recovers, efforts will be made to send him back to his hometown in Sulawesi. The plan involves coordination between the village administration, the subdistrict, police, and the social affairs department.
The case has drawn attention to the mental health challenges faced by isolated individuals in remote areas. While Rahman’s life was saved, his actions underscore the urgent need for early intervention and community-based mental health support in Indonesia’s island regions.
