Choa Chu Kang robbery attempt foiled by calm cashier; man also abused officer and held weapon

A 26-year-old Singaporean man has been sentenced to prison and caning after a failed robbery attempt involving a metal rod, along with separate charges of harassment and weapon possession. His erratic behavior spanned multiple incidents across 2023 and 2024.

Robbery Attempt at Convenience Store

In the early hours of April 14, 2024, Harry Chia Yin Xiang walked into a convenience store at Choa Chu Kang and attempted to rob the cashier using a metal rod. The 26-year-old was reportedly frustrated after failing to buy cigarettes due to a lack of funds and being refused help by his grandmother.

At around 3am, Chia initially claimed to have stolen a bottle of green tea. The 53-year-old cashier forgave the act if the drink was returned. Minutes later, Chia re-entered the store wielding a metal rod, pressing it against the cashier’s neck while demanding the register be opened.

The cashier, unfazed, told Chia that the cash register only opened with a transaction and pointed out the presence of CCTV cameras. This persuaded Chia to abandon the attempt and leave. He was arrested within two hours of the police report being filed.

Obscene Gestures and Verbal Abuse of Public Servant

In a separate incident on August 18, 2023, Chia was caught littering outside Tiong Bahru Plaza. When auxiliary officers from the National Environment Agency issued him a notice to attend court, Chia reacted aggressively.

He crushed the notice, tossed it on the ground, and hurled vulgarities at the officers. Chia also made obscene gestures, including flipping his middle finger, while mocking the officers about the lack of smoking areas. The incident, captured on a body-worn camera, further revealed Chia’s disregard for lawful authority.

Carrying a Knuckleduster in Yishun

On March 14, 2024, Chia was found with a knuckleduster — a banned weapon — in Yishun at 3am following a tip-off. He claimed he carried the weapon due to tensions with alleged gang-affiliated colleagues over a work-related dispute. Chia also stated he had owned the weapon since he was 13 years old but could not recall its origin.

Sentencing and Charges

Chia pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery, harassment of a public servant, and illegal possession of a scheduled weapon. For the robbery attempt, he received two years and six months in jail and six strokes of the cane. The weapon charge added another six months and six more strokes, making it a total of two years and six months’ jail with 12 strokes of the cane.

Prosecutors emphasized Chia’s repeated defiance of legal norms and public safety, calling attention to his “complete lack of regard for lawful authority.”

Chia’s actions underscore the consequences of erratic behavior and disregard for law enforcement in Singapore. The swift response by police and calm intervention by the cashier helped prevent serious harm. The case is a reminder to both Indonesians and Singaporeans of the robust enforcement of public safety laws in the city-state — and how even seemingly small acts can escalate with severe legal repercussions.
