Apple’s Rp16 trillion investment launches with Luxsan in Batam’s tech-driven industrial corridor.

Apple has officially commenced the first phase of its manufacturing facility in Batam, Indonesia, signaling a major move to diversify its global supply chain. Partnering with Luxsan Precision iTech, the tech giant aims to produce high-value components like AirTags in Southeast Asia’s emerging tech hub.

First Phase Begins with Luxsa

On July 21, 2025, BP Batam Deputy for Investment Fary Djemy Francis confirmed that construction has begun on Apple’s Batam-based facility, managed by Chinese manufacturing partner Luxsan Precision iTech. The factory is located in the Tunas Prima Kabil Industrial Zone and began development in June 2025. Luxsan, known for producing Apple devices such as AirPods, iPhones, and Apple Vision Pro, will oversee the production of AirTags in this new facility.

The manufacturing project will roll out in two stages. Phase one utilizes 1.4 hectares of land and is already underway. Phase two, planned for December 2025, will expand operations across a 4-hectare site. The entire project is valued at approximately Rp16 trillion (SGD 1.28 billion), with an expected job creation of 2,000 positions, contributing directly to Indonesia’s high-tech industrial growth.

Overcoming Geopolitical Barriers

The project had previously faced delays due to U.S.-China trade tensions during Donald Trump’s presidency. However, the initiative has now gained momentum as Apple actively diversifies its supply chain away from China. Southeast Asia—particularly Batam—has emerged as a strategic location due to its proximity to Singapore, strong industrial infrastructure, and free trade benefits.

BP Batam has pledged full support for Apple’s high-tech investment, identifying it as a “pioneer” project within the island’s long-term industrial strategy. The Indonesian government also sees the initiative as a catalyst for positioning Batam as a regional technology and innovation hub. Fary noted the importance of leveraging Batam’s maritime potential alongside its industrial transformation.

Unofficial Site Contenders and Local Potential

While Tunas Prima Kabil is confirmed for phase one, earlier discussions had included Nongsa and Batamindo as possible candidates. Regardless, the local supply chain ecosystem stands to benefit. Small and medium enterprises in Batam may now gain access to global tech value chains, while local talent will see increased employment and skill development opportunities in the high-tech sector.

Apple’s investment in Batam marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s ascent within the global tech manufacturing landscape. As Batam transforms into a high-tech production zone, the project promises long-term economic gains, job creation, and regional prestige. For Singaporeans and Indonesians alike, it signifies a deepening of Southeast Asia’s role in shaping future technology production and supply networks
