Economic stress suspected as cause behind Pekanbaru youth’s tragic death in Batam
A young man from Pekanbaru was found dead in a Batam boarding house, with early evidence pointing to suicide possibly linked to financial pressure.
Shocking Discovery in Kara Industrial Zone
A 22-year-old man from Pekanbaru, identified as BPH, was found dead on Monday night (July 14, 2025) in a boarding house located in the Kara Industrial area, Batam Kota. His body was discovered hanging from a window grille, with wrist injuries and bloodstains nearby, suggesting a possible suicide.

The incident was first reported by two of his roommates, IA and YA, who found the room locked from the inside upon returning from work at around 11:00 PM. After repeated calls went unanswered, they forced the door open and found BPH’s body. Immediate contact was made with the local police.
Victim Recently Returned From Hometown
According to IA, one of the roommates, BPH had only recently arrived in Batam from his hometown in Pekanbaru and was staying temporarily at the boarding house. Earlier that day, BPH had requested to borrow Rp70,000 (approx. SGD5.60), stating he needed it urgently. IA told him to wait until he returned from work.
Unfortunately, by the time IA returned, it was too late.
Police Response and Ongoing Investigation
Batam Kota Police immediately dispatched officers along with the Inafis unit from Polresta Barelang to examine the crime scene. Kanit Reskrim Polsek Batam Kota, Iptu Bobby Ramadhana Fauzi, confirmed that the case is under active investigation and all potential angles are being explored.

The body was evacuated to Bhayangkara Police Hospital, Kepri, where a full autopsy will be performed. Authorities have contacted the victim’s family in Pekanbaru, who have approved the examination.
Financial Struggles May Have Played a Role
Preliminary accounts from close contacts suggest the victim may have been facing financial stress. According to Kompol Anak Agung Made Winarta, Batam Kota Police Chief, the victim and his roommates worked at the same company. The fact that BPH had borrowed money just hours before the incident adds weight to theories of economic hardship contributing to his distress.
“Initial indications point to economic pressure, but we will wait for autopsy results before confirming the cause of death,” said Kompol Agung.
Emotional Toll and Public Concern
This tragedy has raised concerns about the emotional and mental well-being of young migrant workers in industrial areas like Batam. Many of them live far from home and often face economic and social pressures in silence. Authorities and community leaders are being urged to boost support services, especially for newcomers.
This incident underlines the urgent need for stronger mental health awareness and economic support for Indonesia’s young workforce, especially those migrating to urban industrial hubs like Batam. As investigations continue, it serves as a tragic reminder of the unseen struggles faced by many — both in Indonesia and among migrant workers connected to Singapore’s labor market.
