66-year-old stallholder dies after unauthorised driver crashes GetGo car into night market stall

A late-night crash at a pasar malam in Circuit Road turned fatal when a 66-year-old woman was struck and killed by a car driven by an unauthorised user of a GetGo rental vehicle.

Fatal Crash at Circuit Road

On the night of July 11, a horrifying accident occurred at a pasar malam in front of Block 52A Circuit Road, Singapore. A 40-year-old man, driving a black GetGo rental car, ploughed into a market stall at around 11.45pm, killing a 66-year-old female stallholder who was reportedly cleaning up after closing. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) paramedic pronounced her dead at the scene.

Unauthorised Driver Behind the Wheel

According to Singapore Police Force (SPF), the driver was arrested for dangerous driving causing death, driving without a licence, and driving without insurance. Preliminary investigations revealed he was not an authorised user of the GetGo vehicle. The car had crashed into the stall and came to a stop at the foot of a staircase, causing massive damage.

Chaos and Aftermath at the Scene

Photos shared by SG Road Vigilante showed the extent of the destruction — the stall was left in disarray with broken tables, food containers, and sauce splattered across the vehicle and tent. The pasar malam, which began operating on 5 July, was scheduled to remain open until 20 July, and had only five stalls.

Stallholders typically closed by 10pm, but the deceased woman, who sold traditional Chinese snacks like tutu kueh, often stayed later. A neighbouring stall operator, Zam, said the vendors had grown close like a family. That night, the aunties smiled and waved before he left — never suspecting the tragedy to follow.

GetGo Responds to Incident

Car-sharing platform GetGo issued a public statement expressing condolences to the victim’s family and confirming the driver was not authorised. They called the incident a “severe breach” of their terms of service. The company assured it is cooperating fully with authorities and is supporting the affected parties, though it declined to comment further due to ongoing investigations.

Community in Shock

Residents were stunned by the incident. A local, Mr Huang, who returned from work early the next morning, saw the area cordoned off by police and a police hearse present — confirming the fatality. The tight-knit nature of pasar malam vendors makes the loss even more painful for the community.

Investigation Underway

As investigations continue, questions remain over how the unauthorised driver accessed the GetGo car. This case highlights both public safety concerns and the risks associated with car-sharing services when misused.

This tragic incident underscores the vulnerability of small business owners and the consequences of reckless driving. For communities in Singapore and across the region, it’s a sobering reminder of the importance of accountability and safety in public and shared spaces. As the investigation proceeds, both law enforcement and service providers must address how such security breaches can be prevented in the future.
