Woman on motorbike groped in Batam, sparking street chase and mob beating before arrest
A shocking incident in Batam early Sunday morning saw a man beaten by a mob after allegedly molesting a female motorcyclist. Police have since arrested the suspect, who now faces legal proceedings.
Man Gropes Woman During Ride, Triggers Pursuit
The streets of Batam turned chaotic around 12:30 AM on Sunday, July 13, 2025, after a man identified as Liston Situmeang (LS) allegedly groped a young woman riding a motorcycle with her boyfriend near Bundaran Barelang. According to witnesses, LS and another man were on a Yamaha Aerox BP 5815 OE when they suddenly overtook the couple’s bike, and LS reached out to touch the victim’s chest.

Her loud screams immediately drew attention from other motorists. One witness, Bayu, stated that several riders began chasing the fleeing suspect, resulting in a dramatic confrontation on Jalan R Suprapto near the entrance to the Yonif swimming pool in Sagulung.
Mob Intervenes Before Police Arrive
During the chase, LS’s motorcycle lost control and fell, giving pursuing motorists and bystanders a chance to capture him. The crowd, unaware of the full context but responding to the commotion, began assaulting LS. The incident, which took place near Villa Muka Kuning and across from RS Awal Bros, quickly escalated and was later widely shared on social media.

Police from Sagulung Sector Police (Polsek Sagulung) arrived shortly after, breaking up the mob and taking LS into custody. His motorcycle was also seized as evidence. His unidentified accomplice managed to escape and is still at large.
Police: Motive Still Under Investigation
Iptu Anwar Aris, Head of the Criminal Investigation Unit at Polsek Sagulung, confirmed LS’s arrest. “We are still investigating his motive. So far, the suspect has remained silent,” Aris told reporters. He assured the public that the case is being developed further to identify the second man involved.
Authorities emphasized the importance of letting legal procedures take their course rather than resorting to mob justice, which can escalate already volatile situations.
Incident Goes Viral, Community Stunned
The footage of LS being beaten by angry residents quickly circulated on local social media platforms, sparking debate over public safety, vigilante actions, and the frequency of sexual harassment in public spaces. Many expressed concern about women’s safety while commuting, especially late at night.
Police advised residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands and to report such incidents immediately. Aris reminded the public: “Every act of harassment will be prosecuted, and no one should resort to violence.”
Victim’s Swift Response Praised
The victim’s quick reaction in alerting others by screaming helped ensure the suspect didn’t escape unnoticed. Her actions, supported by her boyfriend and fellow riders, were instrumental in identifying and apprehending LS. Authorities are also applauding the community’s vigilance while urging a more lawful response in future scenarios.
This incident highlights the ongoing concern over women’s safety in public spaces and the rise of mob justice in response to crimes. While community awareness and vigilance are essential, this case serves as a reminder that the legal system must handle such crimes to prevent further violence. The incident is a wake-up call for both Indonesians and Singaporeans traveling in the region to remain alert and prioritize safe responses in crisis situations.
