Johor authorities clamp down on immigration, drug, and gambling violations in major sweep
A large-scale enforcement operation across 64 car wash centres in Iskandar Malaysia led to the detention of 150 individuals—most of them foreign nationals—for various offences, including immigration violations, drug possession, and illegal gambling.
Massive Operation Targets Non-Compliance
On July 2, authorities in Johor launched a coordinated multi-agency raid on 64 car wash outlets across Iskandar Malaysia, detaining 147 foreign men and 3 locals, aged between 21 and 57. The operation, spearheaded by Johor police and supported by other enforcement units, aimed to tackle business non-compliance, illegal immigration, and criminal activities.
Johor police chief CP Datuk M. Kumar confirmed that the detainees are now under investigation for various infractions under Malaysian law. The majority were foreign workers operating without valid permits or documentation.
Immigration, Drug, and Gambling Violations

The raid uncovered numerous immigration-related offences, including overstaying and working without permits. Several individuals also faced charges under the Dangerous Drugs Act and the Common Gaming Houses Act, indicating active involvement in drug-related crimes and illegal online gambling operations.
Authorities issued warnings that violators may face hefty fines up to RM100,000, imprisonment between two to five years, and whipping, depending on the severity of their offences.
Illegal Business Practices Also Uncovered
In addition to individual offences, the operation revealed widespread non-compliance among the car wash centres themselves. Investigations were launched into:
- Illegal water connections
- Operating without licenses
- Failure to display price tags, as mandated by local trade laws
Equipment from unlicensed businesses was seized, and compounds were issued, marking a strict move toward enforcing local regulations and deterring future violations.
Strategic Enforcement Success
CP Datuk M. Kumar emphasized that the operation successfully disrupted illegal activities involving undocumented migrants while enforcing business compliance. He noted that continued joint efforts among agencies will sustain this momentum and protect public order across Johor.

Such proactive measures not only ensure fair business practices but also tackle criminal exploitation often tied to undocumented labour in the service sector.
Foreign Workers in Focus
The high number of foreign nationals detained sheds light on the dependency of certain informal sectors on undocumented labour. While employment opportunities in Johor attract many migrants—particularly from Indonesia and neighboring ASEAN countries—lack of legal status exposes them to exploitation, and potentially criminal networks.
These raids, while necessary for law enforcement, also signal the urgent need for more structured, ethical employment pathways for regional workers.
The sweeping raids across car wash centres in Johor reflect the state’s growing focus on regulating informal employment, curbing illegal activities, and upholding lawful business operations. As many of the detainees hail from nearby nations, including Indonesia, this incident underscores the broader regional implications of labour migration, legal compliance, and community safety—issues that deeply concern both Indonesians and Singaporeans with strong ties to southern Malaysia.
