Man sentenced to 8 weeks in jail after breaching protection order and injuring elderly father

A 43-year-old man has been jailed for assaulting his elderly father during a domestic dispute in Bukit Panjang, Singapore, violating a protection order meant to safeguard his family.

Breach of Protection Order Ends in Violence

On January 7, 2025, a routine disagreement between a 43-year-old man and his 73-year-old father escalated into a violent altercation. The two, who lived together in a Bukit Panjang flat, clashed when the son attempted to place undisclosed items in his father’s room. The older man refused and threatened to dispose of the belongings, prompting a heated argument.

As the tension mounted, the son punched his father in the head. The elderly man attempted to strike back but missed. The fight ended only after another family member intervened.

The assault resulted in a scalp wound that required stitches. The victim was treated at Ng Teng Fong General Hospital the same evening and was later discharged. This act of violence occurred despite an expedited protection order issued under the Women’s Charter, prohibiting the offender from using violence against both his father and his daughter.

To protect the victim’s identity, the court withheld the name of the offender.

Court Ruling and Sentencing

On June 26, 2025, the assailant pleaded guilty to an assault charge and was sentenced to eight weeks in jail. He was granted bail set at S$10,000 and ordered to surrender himself at the State Courts on July 3 to begin his sentence.

Under Singapore law, assaulting a person can lead to a jail term of up to six years, a fine of up to S$10,000, or both—highlighting the seriousness of the offense.

Recurring Issues in Domestic Violence Cases

This case underscores a troubling pattern of domestic violence incidents that persist even when legal safeguards are in place. The expedited protection order, intended to prevent harm, failed to deter the offender from lashing out physically in a moment of rage.

Authorities in Singapore continue to stress the importance of compliance with court orders and the role of family support in preventing domestic abuse.

Legal Consequences and Social Reflection

Domestic violence, especially against the elderly, remains a critical issue. The swift court action reflects Singapore’s zero-tolerance approach to family violence. It also serves as a reminder to both individuals and communities in the region, including in Indonesia, of the urgent need to recognize and respond to signs of abuse early.

Family safety cannot rely solely on legal frameworks; it requires vigilance, support systems, and accountability within households.

This case reflects broader concerns around rising domestic tensions and the limitations of protective measures in Southeast Asia. For both Indonesians and Singaporeans, it is a stark call to prioritize family welfare, respect the law, and seek help when relationships turn violent. Ensuring elderly protection and enforcing existing laws effectively remains essential in safeguarding community well-being.
