Sudden tornado in Singkep causes significant destruction, forcing families to evacuate
A powerful whirlwind struck Bukit Kabung, Sungai Lumpur, Lingga on June 28, 2025, damaging seven homes and uprooting trees within just 15 minutes.
Swift Tornado Leaves Destruction in Lingga
On Saturday, June 28, 2025, around 13:29 WIB, a tornado swept through Bukit Kabung, Sungai Lumpur, in Singkep District, Lingga Regency. Although the violent winds lasted only 15 minutes, they left behind considerable destruction—damaging seven homes and felling large trees.
Two houses, belonging to residents Herliani and Raniatan, suffered the most severe damage. Herliani was at home with her two children when the storm hit. “We were inside when the vibrations started. I immediately took my kids and ran outside while hugging them tightly,” she recounted.
Emergency Response and Evacuation
Following the incident, emergency personnel from the Dabo Singkep Police and BPBD swiftly evacuated affected families. Herliani and her children sought shelter at a relative’s home, while Raniatan, who lives alone, took refuge at a neighbor’s house.
“The tornado damaged seven homes. We, along with BPBD, immediately responded and assisted residents in evacuating,” said Aiptu Jeffry Zona S., Community Policing Unit Head at Dabo Singkep Police.

Environmental and Structural Damage
Beyond residential destruction, the tornado also toppled several trees, including a large jengkol tree. The fallen trees further obstructed access and raised safety concerns for the surrounding area. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.
Local authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant, warning that more extreme weather events could still occur due to unstable climatic conditions.
Limited Warning for Sudden Weather

The tornado’s rapid onset left little time for residents to prepare or seek cover. The absence of early warning systems in the area underscores a larger issue: the urgent need for better disaster preparedness and weather alert infrastructure in smaller communities across Indonesia.
The situation highlights how even a short burst of severe weather can wreak havoc in under-resourced areas, especially when homes are not built to withstand sudden high winds.
Community Resilience Amid Crisis
Despite the destruction, the swift action of local responders and the support from neighbors reflect the resilience of the Lingga community. Local authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the full extent of the damage.
While temporary shelters have been arranged, long-term recovery will require coordinated assistance, both from local governments and potential regional support systems, to rebuild homes and restore a sense of security for affected families.
The Lingga tornado exemplifies the growing threat of extreme weather in Southeast Asia’s coastal regions. With just 15 minutes of chaos, lives were upended, homes were wrecked, and entire neighborhoods were shaken. For both Indonesians and regional observers like Singaporeans, the event is a stark reminder of how vital early warning systems, climate adaptation, and disaster readiness have become in the face of intensifying environmental threats.
