Father Arrested for Molesting Toddler in Batam
A man identified as SM, 26, was apprehended by police in Bengkong, Batam, on June 25, 2025, after being accused of sexually abusing his biological daughter, who was only 3.5 years old. The incident occurred while the child’s mother was shopping, during which SM locked himself inside their rented room. The mother, suspicious of the locked door, peeked through the window and saw her husband naked and attempting to hide behind the door.
Upon forcing the door open, the mother found her daughter crying and visibly traumatized. Medical examination revealed injuries to the child’s genital area, including redness, scratches, and a small wound the size of a pinky finger. The child identified her father as the perpetrator. SM admitted to the crime during police interrogation and was immediately detained.
Legal Charges and Evidence
SM faces charges under Indonesia’s stringent child protection laws, specifically Articles 76E and 82 of the 2016 Child Protection Law, which prescribe prison sentences ranging from 5 to 15 years for sexual offenses against minors. Police also confiscated evidence, including the child’s clothing and the suspect’s mobile phone during the arrest.
The police have vowed to pursue the case rigorously to ensure justice for the victim. The suspect did not resist arrest and is currently held in custody awaiting trial
Rising Violence Against Women and Children in Batam

This case is part of a troubling trend in Batam, where violence against women and children has surged in 2025. According to the Regional Technical Implementation Unit for the Protection of Women and Children (UPTD PPA) Batam, there have been 141 reported cases of violence against women and children in the first half of 2025 alone. Of these, 109 cases involved children, with sexual abuse being the most prevalent form.
UPTD PPA Batam head Dedy Suryadi highlighted that the majority of child abuse cases are sexual in nature, followed by physical and psychological abuse. The agency provides comprehensive support services, including legal aid, psychological counseling, and medical care to victims, working closely with hospitals, police, and NGOs to facilitate recovery

Community Role and Prevention Efforts
Authorities emphasize the critical role of community vigilance and reporting in combating child abuse. UPTD PPA encourages citizens to report any suspected violence promptly to break the cycle of abuse. Safe houses operated by the agency provide secure environments for victims to recover physically and emotionally.
The increase in such cases underscores the urgent need for sustained public awareness, stronger protective measures, and collaborative efforts between law enforcement and social services to safeguard vulnerable populations in Batam and beyond.
The arrest of SM for molesting his toddler daughter is a stark reminder of the pervasive threat of child sexual abuse in Batam, reflecting broader challenges faced by Indonesia in protecting its children and women. The surge in reported cases calls for heightened community awareness, robust law enforcement, and comprehensive victim support to foster safer environments. These efforts are crucial not only for Indonesian society but also for neighboring Singaporeans who share social and regional ties, emphasizing the importance of cross-border cooperation in addressing such grave human rights violations.
