Massive fire engulfs event equipment warehouse in Batam, causing panic and heavy losses.

A fierce fire tore through a wedding equipment warehouse in Batuaji, Batam, on the afternoon of June 25, 2025, sending thick smoke over residential areas and prompting a large-scale emergency response.

Fire Erupts in Residential Zone

Panic swept through the Perumahan Aster neighborhood in Batuaji on Wednesday afternoon as a fire broke out at a wedding equipment storage warehouse owned by Iwan (49). The fire began around 3:00 PM local time at Blok C5 No. 12-13, RT 002/RW 030, Kelurahan Buliang, engulfing the building in minutes due to the extreme heat and the presence of highly flammable materials such as fabric, chairs, and tents.

Five fire trucks were immediately deployed to the scene, with both firefighters and local residents working together to contain the blaze. Kapolsek Batuaji, AKP Raden Bimo Dwi Lambang, reported that the area had to be secured to keep residents at a safe distance. “The fire was intense, and it took collective efforts to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby homes,” he stated.

Dense Smoke Raises Alarm

As flames climbed high, thick smoke blanketed the nearby residential zone, forcing many residents to evacuate their homes. Witness videos circulating on social media showed chaotic scenes, with families fleeing and firefighters navigating narrow streets to reach the source. The situation remained tense until the fire was fully brought under control around 5:40 PM.

Heavy Damage, No Casualties

While no injuries or fatalities were reported, the financial impact was significant. The warehouse, filled with party decorations and flammable goods, was completely destroyed. Initial estimates suggest damages may reach tens of millions of rupiah. Authorities are continuing to assess the extent of material loss, and no official conversion to SGD has been released yet.

Cause Still Under Investigation

Police have begun interviewing witnesses as part of their ongoing investigation into the cause of the fire. “We’re still gathering information and haven’t yet spoken to the warehouse owner,” Bimo added. The possibility of electrical faults or negligence has not been ruled out, but investigators are keeping all scenarios open at this stage.

This fire underscores the vulnerabilities in densely populated areas when industrial or commercial activities are mixed with residential life. For communities in Batam and nearby regions including Singapore, the incident highlights the urgent need for stricter fire safety measures and emergency preparedness in urban planning.
