Bintan Government responds to growing crocodile threats with inter-agency task force and mitigation plan

A spike in crocodile sightings and attacks across Bintan has prompted swift action from local authorities. With one fatality and multiple encounters reported, officials are forming a dedicated task force to protect communities and manage wildlife threats.

Bintan Launches Crocodile Task Force After Deadly Encounters

Faced with rising crocodile incidents in residential areas, the Bintan Regency Government has announced the formation of a Crocodile Wildlife Task Force. This decision was finalized during a high-level cross-sectoral coordination meeting on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, led by Bintan Regional Secretary Ronny Kartika in Bandar Seri Bentan.

The urgency stems from nine crocodile-related cases reported since early 2024, including a fatal attack in Teluk Bintan this year. According to the Bintan Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), crocodile sightings have been recorded in multiple subdistricts, including Tambelan, Teluk Bintan, Toapaya, and Gunung Kijang.

The task force will operate under the leadership of BPBD Bintan and work closely with key agencies such as the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Coastal and Marine Resource Management Center (BPSDPL), Environment Agency (DLH), local police, and the military. This collective aims to create a responsive system for monitoring, alerting, and handling crocodile threats.

“We need a balanced approach,” said Ronny Kartika. “Crocodiles are protected species, but they also pose a life-threatening risk to our residents. Our response must prioritize public safety without violating environmental regulations.”

Planned Actions Include Signage, Education, And Relocation Protocols

Initial mitigation measures include identifying high-risk zones, installing warning signs, and conducting public education campaigns. The government is also requesting clear protocols from BKSDA and BPSDPL regarding the safe capture and potential relocation of crocodiles.

“What do we do if a crocodile is caught?” asked Ronny during the meeting. “Should we send it to Batam, place it in local conservation facilities, or follow another legal procedure? We need definitive guidance.”

Cross-Sectoral Ramping Up Operational Readiness

BPBD Bintan will draft an operational blueprint aligned with national regulations and local needs. Technical input from BKSDA and BPSDPL is crucial in developing a response strategy that adheres to conservation laws while neutralizing risks.

According to BPBD head Ramlah, there are “dozens of hotspot points” where crocodiles are frequently seen near homes. “We need a sustained, multisectoral approach to ensure these creatures do not threaten public welfare,” she emphasized.

A Preemptive Step To Avoid Further Tragedy

Beyond enforcement and relocation, the task force will also assess habitat disruption as a potential cause of increased crocodile-human interaction. Sustainable long-term planning will be essential to balance wildlife conservation and residential safety.

Local officials hope this task force can prevent future tragedies, minimize panic, and create a model for addressing similar human-wildlife conflicts in other regions.

Bintan’s bold move to form a Crocodile Task Force reflects a broader challenge facing rapidly urbanizing tropical regions: how to maintain biodiversity without endangering human lives. As wildlife habitats shrink, proactive governance, public education, and inter-agency coordination will be critical not only for Indonesia but also for neighboring nations like Singapore that share regional ecological concerns.
