With tensions flaring between Iran and Israel, the Indonesian government has initiated an emergency operation to evacuate 578 Indonesian citizens (WNI) stranded in both countries. Most of the WNI are students residing in conflict-prone areas. As aerial routes remain dangerous due to ongoing hostilities, the Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) is conducting a land-based evacuation beginning Friday morning, 20 June 2025.

According to TNI Headquarters, 386 WNI are located in Iran and 192 in Israel. Of those, 115 in Iran and 11 in Israel have formally requested evacuation. The TNI has deployed a Crisis Response Team (CRT) of 34 joint personnel to manage the complex, cross-border operation.

  • WNI in Iran will be transported via land to Baku, Azerbaijan, departing at 07:00 local time with an estimated 30-hour journey.
  • WNI in Israel will be moved to Amman, Jordan, before flying home.

Both groups will transit for two nights in their respective safe zones before continuing to Indonesia via commercial flights.

Strategic Partnerships and High Alert Status

Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono has raised the alert level at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran to Siaga 1, reflecting the gravity of the situation. He also engaged with neighboring countries of Iran, requesting diplomatic clearance for smooth border passage during evacuation.
Meanwhile, TNI Chief General Agus Subiyanto has instructed full inter-agency coordination to ensure every step—from ground movement to air transit—is secure and swift.

With Iran and Israel exchanging aerial attacks, the decision to use land routes underscores TNI’s cautious approach to citizen safety. “The airspace remains volatile. Land evacuation is currently the safest option,” stated TNI Spokesperson Major General Kristomei Sianturi. The plan includes checkpoints, secure convoys, and embassy coordination in each transit country.

Humanitarian Duty and National Presence

TNI emphasized that evacuating Indonesians from conflict zones is a demonstration of national responsibility. “Protecting our citizens abroad is a clear manifestation of the state’s presence during emergencies,” said Sianturi. The operation highlights Indonesia’s capability to act swiftly in global crisis zones to protect its diaspora.

As the Middle East conflict intensifies, Indonesia’s rapid response through the TNI underscores its commitment to national safety beyond borders. For regions like Singapore and Indonesia, which maintain large global diasporas, such preparedness serves as a reminder of the importance of responsive diplomacy and coordinated evacuation frameworks. The situation remains fluid, but Indonesia has taken a clear and timely stand for its citizens.
