Massive 23rd-floor flat fire in Holland Close prompts evacuation of 100 residents
A fire broke out in a high-rise HDB flat in Holland Close on June 19, sending four people—including two firefighters—to hospital and prompting the urgent evacuation of about 100 residents.
Evening Fire Triggers Emergency
At approximately 7.25pm on June 19, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) responded to a blaze on the 23rd floor of Block 5 Holland Close, near Holland Village. The fire originated from a bedroom and was extinguished using two water jets. However, the entire unit suffered significant smoke and heat damage, according to SCDF.
Two residents had self-evacuated before emergency teams arrived. They were assessed for smoke inhalation and transported to Singapore General Hospital (SGH) for further treatment.
Firefighters Among The Injured

While battling the fire, two firefighters experienced heat exhaustion. One was sent to SGH, and the other to the National University Hospital (NUH). SCDF confirmed both were conscious at the time of hospitalisation.
The intense heat and risk of falling debris led authorities to cordon off the block. Broken glass was seen falling to the ground, and residents were quickly moved to safety.
Large-Scale Evacuation And Community Support
About 100 residents from the affected block were evacuated and gathered at a nearby futsal court, where police conducted a roll call to ensure everyone was accounted for.
Defence Minister and Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar GRC, Chan Chun Sing, visited the site to oversee support efforts and later posted on Facebook wishing those injured a speedy recovery. He encouraged affected residents to reach out to the Buona Vista Community Centre for temporary shelter or additional help.
Ongoing Investigation Into The Cause

The SCDF confirmed that the cause of the fire remains under investigation. Videos circulated online showed flames damaging areas below the unit, including an air-conditioning condenser.
Emergency services, including multiple police vehicles, were seen managing the scene, as crowds gathered near the evacuation site.
The swift response by emergency personnel prevented further tragedy in the densely populated block, highlighting Singapore’s readiness in crisis situations. For communities in Singapore and beyond, the incident underscores the importance of fire preparedness, building safety, and the resilience of public service forces.
