Man newly arrived from abroad was arrested in Tanjunguban carrying one kilogram of meth
Police in Bintan have arrested a 35-year-old man suspected of drug trafficking after discovering a kilogram of methamphetamine in his possession. The suspect, who had recently entered Indonesia from Malaysia, was planning to transit through the Riau Islands before heading to Sulawesi.
Arrest Triggered by Community Tip
On May 25, 2025, based on a tip-off from local residents, the Narcotics Investigation Unit of Bintan Police arrested a man identified as R at a house in Kampung Mentigi, Tanjunguban. The arrest took place around 11:00 PM and was conducted in the presence of local authorities, including the RT (neighborhood leader).
Upon searching the premises, officers uncovered a black bag containing a large package suspected to be methamphetamine, weighing approximately one kilogram. The package was neatly sealed, and additional traces of previously used narcotics were also found.
Suspect Newly Arrived from Malaysia
R, who is not a local resident, reportedly entered Bintan from Malaysia just days prior to his arrest. According to local accounts, he had temporarily stayed at a resident’s home in Mentigi before continuing his journey to Sulawesi. Police suspect the meth was a consignment from an overseas contact.
Legal Process and Penalties
R is currently detained at the Bintan Police Headquarters as authorities await the results of a laboratory test on the seized substance. Should the test confirm the package is methamphetamine, R will face charges under Articles 114(2) and/or 112(2) of Law No. 35/2009 on Narcotics.
The potential sentence includes a maximum of 20 years in prison, reflecting Indonesia’s strict stance on drug-related crimes, especially involving cross-border trafficking.

Meth Seizures Continue in Strategic Zones
Bintan’s proximity to neighboring countries makes it a strategic and vulnerable zone for illicit drug transit. The arrest of a newly arrived suspect with a large quantity of narcotics underscores the region’s ongoing challenge with international drug smuggling.
Authorities are investigating further to trace the origins and intended networks of the shipment, potentially involving larger syndicates operating across Malaysia and Indonesia.
This arrest not only highlights Bintan’s critical role in regional drug trafficking routes but also signals the urgency for tighter surveillance in international entry points. As maritime borders between Indonesia and Singapore remain highly active, both nations have a shared interest in curbing narcotics movement that threatens community safety and public health.
