Foul stench led neighbours to discover the decomposed body of 81-year-old in rental unit
An 81-year-old deaf man was found dead in his Bukit Merah rental flat after neighbours detected a persistent foul smell. The elderly resident had reportedly not been seen for weeks.
Foul Smell Leads to Shocking Discovery
On the morning of Saturday, May 31, a decomposing body of an 81-year-old deaf man was found in his unit at Block 117 Bukit Merah View. The Singapore Police Force responded to a distress call at around 11:10am. Upon arrival, the man was found motionless and pronounced dead at the scene. Preliminary investigations have ruled out foul play, although a full investigation is ongoing.
Neighbours Alerted by Odour and Absence
The man lived alone and had resided in the flat for over 14 years, according to 68-year-old neighbour Mr Zhuo (transliterated). Zhuo noticed a persistent odour three days before contacting authorities. Initially assuming it was garbage, he was compelled to act when the stench worsened and realised the man had not performed his usual weekend routine of drying clothes — a clear sign something was amiss.

Failed Attempts to Mask the Smell
Zhuo’s roommate had sprayed insecticide in a failed attempt to cover the smell, but the odour grew stronger. The discomfort even disrupted their sleep, prompting Zhuo to call the police. Other neighbours confirmed they hadn’t seen the elderly man for weeks and had also detected the unpleasant smell, though some dismissed it at first due to frequent garbage odours in the estate.
Deceased Was Known But Reclusive
The deceased, reportedly a retired petrol pump attendant, kept to himself. Being deaf, he often nodded in acknowledgment but rarely engaged in conversation. According to another resident, 40-year-old Ms Wu, he regularly bought food downstairs and seemed to be in good health. She also mentioned the man had a son, though he was seldom seen visiting.
No Foul Play Suspected
Authorities have stated that based on preliminary checks, there were no signs of foul play. The man’s death, while tragic, is not considered suspicious. Nonetheless, the police are continuing investigations to determine the exact cause of death.
This incident in Bukit Merah is a stark reminder of the silent struggles faced by many elderly individuals living alone. For both Singaporeans and Indonesians alike, it underscores the urgent need for stronger community vigilance and eldercare outreach. Regular check-ins and stronger neighbourly ties could prevent such silent tragedies from recurring.
