Malaysian and four foreigners detained after coordinated raids in Kulai and Simpang Renggam

Johor police successfully resolved a kidnap-for-ransom case within 24 hours, rescuing the hostage and arresting five suspects across multiple raids. The swift response highlights the efficiency of local enforcement in tackling organised abduction cases.

Swift Response to Ransom Call

The case began when a 46-year-old foreigner lodged a report after receiving a distress call from his friend’s wife. She claimed her husband had been abducted and was being held by individuals demanding RM20,000 (≈ SGD 5,325) for his release. The call prompted immediate investigation by Johor Bahru (North) police.

Raids Across Kulai and Simpang Renggam

On May 28, police launched simultaneous operations across Kulai and Simpang Renggam in Kluang. Within 24 hours, the hostage was located and rescued in Kulai. Five suspects—one Malaysian and four foreign nationals aged between 22 and 48—were arrested without incident.

Charges Under Serious Criminal Offences

The suspects are currently being investigated under Section 364 of the Penal Code for kidnapping with intent to murder, a charge that carries a sentence of up to 30 years’ imprisonment and whipping. They also face charges under Section 324 for voluntarily causing hurt with dangerous weapons.

Immigration Violations Under Scrutiny

Authorities are probing additional offences under the Immigration Act 1959/63. Foreign suspects may face charges under Section 6(1)(C) for illegal entry and Section 15(1)(C) for overstaying. All five were remanded on May 31 for six days to assist with ongoing investigations.

Clean Records but Ongoing Investigation

Johor Bahru (North) police chief ACP Balveer Singh confirmed that none of the suspects had prior criminal records and all tested negative for drug use. Police have also seized undisclosed evidence but are withholding further information due to the sensitive nature of the case.
