Riau Islands Police intercept suspected smuggling vessel off Tanjung Gundap waters in Batam

A joint police operation in Batam waters uncovered 10 tons of illegal diesel fuel aboard a ship suspected of smuggling, raising concerns about fuel theft and maritime security.

Maritime Interception off Tanjung Gundap

On May 28, 2025, the Riau Islands Regional Police (Polda Kepri) successfully seized a vessel suspected of smuggling 10 tons of illegal diesel fuel. The operation took place in the waters near Tanjung Gundap, Batam, where the KM Rizki Laut was stopped and searched by the Directorate of Special Criminal Investigation (Ditreskrimsus).

Patrol Leads to Major Find

The interception stemmed aimed at curbing illicit fuel trafficking in the Riau Island and surrounding areas. The patrol team noticed suspicious activity and movement from the KM Rizki Laut before initiating a targeted stop.

This discovery adds to a growing list of fuel-related crimes in Batam’s coastal zones, where subsidized diesel is frequently exploited for illegal sale, especially in the fisheries and transportation sectors.

Legal Action and Follow-up

The captain and three crew members of the KM Rizki Laut have been taken into custody for questioning. If found guilty under Law No. 22 of 2001 on Oil and Natural Gas, they could face up to six years in prison and a fine of IDR 60 billion (approximately SGD 4.8 million).

Implications for Regional Security

Illegal fuel distribution poses significant challenges for Indonesia’s maritime security and economic stability. Authorities warn that smuggling undermines national fuel subsidies and creates an unfair competitive landscape for lawful businesses.

By cracking down on these activities, the Riau Islands Police aim to reinforce legal compliance and deter future smuggling attempts across regional waters.

Stronger Oversight Ahead

The latest seizure has sparked calls for tighter enforcement and surveillance across the Riau Archipelago. Coordinated efforts involving port authorities, customs, and local governments are expected to increase.

The seizure of 10 tons of illegal diesel in Batam waters underscores the persistent threat of maritime fuel smuggling. With heightened patrols and firm legal action, Indonesian authorities are working to safeguard national resources and economic integrity—an effort that resonates strongly with Batam’s neighbors, including Singapore, where cross-border maritime security remains a shared priority.
