77-year-old who lived alone for over two decades believed to have died in her sleep; no foul play suspected
A tragic discovery shocked residents at Block 163 Bedok South Road on May 25, when the decomposed body of a 77-year-old woman was found in her flat—after neighbours below noticed blood dripping from their ceiling and a foul smell in their home.
Blood Drips Through Ceiling
On May 25, 2025, a family living on the third floor of Block 163 Bedok South Road noticed blood seeping from the ceiling of their master bedroom. A foul smell had accompanied the leak, prompting them to investigate.
Upon going upstairs, they encountered the deceased’s sister, who had already been trying to reach her sibling since 10 a.m., knocking on the locked door. Concerned by the blood and odour, they urged her to contact the police.

Woman Lived Alone for Over 25 Years
The deceased, known to neighbours as Nancy, had reportedly lived alone for more than two decades. Her husband had passed away years ago, and she had no immediate family residing with her. Neighbours described her as quiet and independent.
Her sister told police that she had spoken to Nancy by phone just two days prior, on May 23, but was unable to reach her again that night. A lunch box left outside her door since Friday further raised alarms among neighbours.

Locksmith Refused Entry Due to Smell
Before the police were called, the sister had attempted to gain entry by hiring a locksmith. However, the locksmith refused to proceed after detecting a strong odour, reportedly suggesting that something was seriously wrong inside the flat.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force arrived on scene by late afternoon. The woman’s body was found motionless and in a state of decomposition, with paramedics pronouncing her dead at the scene.
Cause of Death: Natural, Not Foul Play
According to her niece, Nancy was a retired teacher with no known cardiovascular issues. The police later informed the family that she had likely died in her sleep, and the blood seepage was due to natural decomposition.
Preliminary investigations have ruled out foul play, although a full report is pending.
Neighbours Shaken, Forced to Leave Bedroom
The downstairs neighbours, Mr. Ou and Madam Zeng, are temporarily sleeping in their guest room, citing an unbearable stench in their master bedroom. “We realised something was not right when we saw the blood. It was frightening,” said Madam Zeng.
Other neighbours expressed sadness, recalling Nancy as polite but private. “It’s heartbreaking she died alone,” one resident commented.
This deeply saddening case underscores the social isolation faced by some elderly residents in urban environments. It serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of regular check-ins and community vigilance, particularly for those living alone. Authorities continue their investigation to formally confirm the cause of death, while residents grapple with the disturbing aftermath.
