A 29-year-old Batam resident was killed by lightning while fishing off Batu Merah coast.
A fishing trip turned tragic on Saturday, May 18, when a man from Batam was fatally struck by lightning while casting his net at sea. The incident has shocked local residents and serves as a grim reminder of the dangers posed by unpredictable weather.
Fatal Strike in Batu Merah
The victim, 34-year-old Didit Kurniawan, was fishing off the coast of Batu Merah, Batam, when a sudden lightning strike hit him. According to eyewitnesses, Didit was casting his net around 3:00 PM on Saturday when dark clouds began to form. Moments later, a blinding flash struck near his position on the water.
Didit was immediately pulled from the water and rushed to Puskesmas Batu Merah, a nearby community health center. However, medical personnel pronounced him dead on arrival.
Immediate Medical Response Failed
Residents who assisted in bringing Didit ashore reported that his body showed visible burn marks, a telltale sign of a direct lightning hit. The medical team at Puskesmas confirmed that he had no vital signs upon arrival and noted severe trauma consistent with lightning-induced cardiac arrest.
This incident marks the second weather-related fatality in the region this month, highlighting growing concerns over the impact of unpredictable climate events in coastal Indonesia.
Funeral Held The Next Day
Didit’s body was laid to rest on Monday, May 19, in a quiet family ceremony attended by close relatives and neighbors. According to family members, he was a father of two and a regular fisherman known in the Batu Merah community. His death has left a deep void, especially among those who rely on small-scale fishing to support their families.
The village head expressed condolences and urged residents to take extra precautions during the rainy season, especially when venturing into open waters.
Public Safety Concerns Rise
Authorities have since issued warnings to the public, especially small-boat fishermen, to monitor weather forecasts closely before heading out. The Batam Meteorological Agency stated that thunderstorm activity has increased due to shifting seasonal winds and humidity levels.
“We advise everyone to stay alert and avoid fishing or sailing during storm warnings,” said an agency spokesperson on Sunday.
Weather Forecast and Preparedness
The local government emphasized the need for better preparedness and real-time weather alerts. Efforts are being made to distribute weather updates through community channels and WhatsApp groups to reduce risk among vulnerable populations, including fishermen and coastal workers.
This tragedy has sparked discussions on implementing more structured safety training for local fishing communities, who often face nature’s wrath without proper gear or information.
The death of Didit Kurniawan serves as a painful reminder of nature’s unpredictability and the growing risks faced by coastal communities in Southeast Asia. For Indonesians and Singaporeans who frequently travel or work in maritime environments, weather awareness is no longer optional—it’s a matter of life and death.
