Polda Kepri intercepts narcotics operation at Batam’s Harbour Bay, suspects linked to Malaysia

Riau Islands Police (Polda Kepri) arrested two suspected drug couriers in Batam, seizing 1 kilogram of heroin and 12.5 grams of methamphetamine. The interception took place at Harbour Bay exit gate and is believed to be part of a transnational drug trafficking network.

On May 5, 2025, officers from Sub-Directorate II of the Narcotics Unit at Polda Kepri apprehended two men—identified as B and R—at the exit gate of Harbour Bay, Batu Ampar, Batam. The suspects were riding a black-and-red Scoopy motorcycle when they were stopped and searched based on a community tip-off regarding drug smuggling activities in the area.

Police discovered a clear plastic bag containing heroin and another package holding methamphetamine (commonly referred to as sabu). The seized narcotics included 1 kilogram of heroin and 12.5 grams of meth, all packaged and ready for distribution.

Source Linked to Malaysia

Preliminary investigations suggest that the drugs may have originated from Malaysia, with Batam serving as a transit point. According to Dirresnarkoba Polda Kepri, Kombes Pol Anggoro Wicaksono, the contraband was allegedly en route to Jakarta via Sumatra.

“This case is still under active development. We suspect this is part of a Malaysia-based syndicate,” Anggoro said during a press briefing on May 15. Investigators are working to trace the broader network and uncover the source and logistics channel behind the drug movement.

The arrests followed intelligence gathered from local residents and weeks of surveillance by narcotics officers. AKBP Gokmauliate Sitompul, Head of Sub-Directorate II, said both suspects were under observation prior to their interception. The tip-off proved accurate, and the suspects were taken into custody with the narcotics intact.

Authorities are also evaluating whether Harbour Bay, a key port area in Batam, is being exploited as a smuggling corridor for drugs destined for larger cities in Indonesia or abroad.

Under Indonesia’s strict anti-narcotics laws, the suspects could face severe penalties, including life imprisonment or the death penalty, depending on the outcome of the judicial process. Both heroin and methamphetamine are classified as Class I drugs under Indonesian law, carrying the harshest legal consequences.

The investigation team has forwarded the suspects and evidence to the Riau Islands Narcotics Directorate Headquarters for further processing.

Batam’s Strategic Risk as a Drug Transit Hub

Batam’s proximity to Malaysia and its status as a free trade zone make it particularly vulnerable to transnational drug trafficking. The city has seen repeated drug-related arrests in recent years, highlighting the need for stronger border surveillance and maritime enforcement.

Authorities continue to urge public vigilance and community cooperation in reporting suspicious activities, stressing that collaboration is key to curbing illicit trafficking operations.

The successful interception of 1kg of heroin and meth in Batam underscores the growing complexity of drug networks operating through Southeast Asia’s maritime routes. For both Indonesians and Singaporeans, this case highlights the urgent need for enhanced cross-border cooperation and community-level vigilance to disrupt trafficking chains before they reach urban centers.
