Sentosa’s iconic marine attraction shuts down for massive revamp ahead of rebranding as SGO
After more than a decade of operation, Sentosa’s S.E.A. Aquarium officially closed on April 30, 2025. It will return in a new form as the Singapore Oceanarium (SGO), set to launch in the third quarter of 2025.
The S.E.A. Aquarium, home to more than 100,000 marine animals from over 1,000 species, closed its doors on April 30, 2025, to make way for a bold transformation. A wave of nostalgia swept across social media as visitors shared farewell posts, including snapshots from interns documenting the final day with analog film.
The closure marks the end of an era for one of Sentosa’s most iconic attractions, which has been a cornerstone of family tourism, marine education, and international visitor engagement for years.

New Chapter Begins With Singapore Oceanarium
The aquarium will be reborn as the Singapore Oceanarium (SGO)—a next-generation marine facility more than three times larger than its predecessor. Slated to reopen in Q3 2025, SGO will integrate state-of-the-art digital technology, interactive exhibits, and enhanced storytelling on marine ecosystems.
According to Resorts World Sentosa, the revamped attraction will focus not only on marine display but also on biodiversity education, conservation, and research, positioning Singapore as a leader in ocean literacy and sustainability
Immersive Learning for All Ages
The SGO experience will feature a multi-zone exhibition highlighting key marine narratives, including:
- The evolution of marine species
- Life in the unexplored deep sea
- Singapore’s coastal and reef ecosystems
Using immersive storytelling and sensory technology, SGO aims to inspire curiosity and drive public awareness of ocean preservation in a way that’s both interactive and educational.
Community Outreach and Scientific Research
Beyond the visitor experience, SGO will serve as a research and learning center, hosting workshops, seminars, and collaborative programs with marine experts and visiting scientists. As revealed in Genting Singapore’s 38th Annual General Meeting, SGO’s mission includes empowering the community through outreach and contributing to marine restoration projects in the region.
With explorers-in-residence and a growing knowledge-sharing platform, SGO will blur the lines between museum, aquarium, and science lab.
Tickets Unavailable During Transition
The S.E.A. Aquarium website has temporarily suspended ticket sales, with details on the reopening to be announced closer to the launch date. Meanwhile, the transformation reflects Singapore’s broader tourism shift toward eco-conscious and educational experiences.
RWS is investing in innovation not just to draw global visitors but also to strengthen Sentosa’s status as a hub for marine-based learning and sustainability.
The closure of the S.E.A. Aquarium marks not just the end of a beloved destination but the beginning of a new era in marine exploration. The upcoming Singapore Oceanarium promises to be a groundbreaking space that merges science, storytelling, and sustainability—cementing Singapore’s leadership in the future of responsible tourism and ocean education.
