Apple secures land in Nongsa’s Tunas Industrial Zone, factory construction to begin later this year.

Apple has confirmed plans to invest in Indonesia by building a factory in Batam. The plant, located in the Tunas Industrial Zone, Nongsa, will focus on AirTag manufacturing and is expected to begin operations later this year.

Apple Finalizes Land for Batam Facility

According to BP Batam Chairman Amsakar Achmad, Apple will be one of the main tenants in Tunas Industrial Prima, located in Kabil, Nongsa. Speaking on May 5, 2025, Amsakar confirmed that Apple has completed land acquisition and is moving forward with plans to begin construction before the end of the year. “Apple will definitely be there this year,” he said, citing strong commitment from the tech giant.

While Apple has yet to publicly disclose full project details, Amsakar confirmed that the investment involves using an existing tenant building in the zone, with site preparations already underway. This marks Apple’s second major investment in Batam, following the earlier establishment of Apple Developer Academy at Nongsa Digital Park.

AirTag Manufacturing Confirmed

The facility is expected to focus on AirTag production, although Apple has not formally announced the full product scope. Deputy for Investment Promotion at the Ministry of Investment, Nurul Ichwan, stated that Apple had already secured land in Batam. “If they’ve bought land, it’s clear they are moving forward,” he said on April 23, 2025, adding that recent meetings with Minister Rosan Roeslani confirmed the company’s intentions.

Although detailed timelines are still under wraps, officials from both BP Batam and the Ministry of Investment expect a groundbreaking ceremony and official announcement to take place within the coming months.

Apple’s Strategic Interest in Batam

Batam continues to attract global tech investment due to its strategic access to international trade routes, skilled workforce, and maturing digital infrastructure. Apple has reportedly been eyeing Batam for years. “Batam remains a top destination for foreign investors,” Amsakar said.

He added that Apple’s presence would solidify the city’s reputation as a technology manufacturing hub and create new momentum in Batam’s industrial transformation. “Apple will become a new magnet for industrial growth in Batam,” he emphasized.

Political Climate and Trade Challenges

One potential hurdle to the investment is the recent 32% reciprocal tariff imposed on Indonesia by U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration. However, Nurul Ichwan downplayed concerns, noting that Apple’s global structure means the company’s investments still contribute significantly to the U.S. economy via Gross National Product (GNP), even when operating offshore.

“Apple’s global dominance ensures that any foreign investment still benefits the U.S.,” Nurul said, expressing confidence that geopolitical challenges would not derail the project.

Next Steps and Economic Impact

BP Batam confirmed that manufacturing will range from assembly to product finalization, with production plans already presented to the agency. While the investment value has yet to be disclosed, local officials are optimistic about the job creation potential and technology transfer opportunities the project will bring.

Apple’s move is expected to catalyze digital transformation, local employment, and industrial innovation in Batam, reinforcing its strategic role in Indonesia’s national economic agenda.

Apple’s upcoming factory in Batam marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s industrial and digital expansion. With confirmed plans for AirTag production and strategic positioning in Nongsa, the investment is set to bolster Batam’s global standing in high-tech manufacturing. The initiative opens up substantial opportunities for local talent and signals a deepening of U.S.–Indonesia tech cooperation despite international trade headwinds.
