27-year-old suspect ditches car after 7km chase, armed with knife and golf club

A man with eight criminal records is on the run after a dangerous escape from a Johor roadblock, sparking a police manhunt.

Roadblock Turns Chaotic at Sultan Iskandar Building

A 27-year-old local man is the subject of an urgent police search following his reckless escape from a roadblock near the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) checkpoint in Johor Bahru on Tuesday evening. The suspect, who was driving a Mitsubishi Triton, was flagged down for using a bus-only lane at around 8.50 PM. When two officers approached, he accelerated away aggressively, initiating a high-risk chase.

Knife and Golf Club Found in Vehicle

The suspect sped through traffic for approximately 7 kilometres before abandoning his 4×4 and fleeing into nearby bushes on foot. When officers searched the vehicle, they discovered an 18cm knife and a golf club, raising concerns about the man’s intent. Johor Bahru South police chief ACP Raub Selamat confirmed the details and labelled the suspect’s behaviour as “reckless and dangerous.”

Extensive Criminal History Revealed

Further investigation revealed that the suspect has eight prior criminal records, primarily involving drug-related offences. He is already listed as a wanted individual. ACP Raub noted that the possession of weapons and his aggressive response during a routine stop escalates the seriousness of the case. Law enforcement is actively seeking his whereabouts, warning the public that action will be taken against anyone found obstructing police efforts.

Multiple Charges Await the Fugitive

The case is currently being investigated under three separate legal provisions. These include Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant, Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958 for illegal possession of weapons, and Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. If convicted, the suspect could face a combined penalty of over 20 years in prison, fines exceeding RM25,000, and corporal punishment.

Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact Investigating Officer Inspector Radhiah Ahmad at 013-5665710 or reach out to the Johor Bahru South District Police Headquarters via 07-2182323. As of now, the suspect remains at large, with search operations extending across neighbouring areas and state lines.

This incident underscores rising safety concerns in cross-border checkpoints and major Malaysian roadways. For travellers between Johor and Singapore, the event is a reminder of ongoing efforts to tighten security. It also reflects the growing complexity of policing repeat offenders who pose a threat to public and officer safety in both urban and border regions.

The escape of an armed, drug-related repeat offender from a key Johor checkpoint highlights pressing challenges in regional law enforcement. With heightened alert along vital routes, authorities in Johor and surrounding regions must remain vigilant. Public cooperation is essential to ensure individuals who threaten public order are swiftly brought to justice.
