Batam activist targeted after speaking out against alleged illegal cut and fill operations
Social media activist Yusril Koto became the target of a midnight terror act days after publicly accusing powerful figures in Batam of involvement in illegal land development. The attack, caught on CCTV, has stirred public concern over silencing dissent.
Vehicle Vandalized in Midnight Attack
At 1:27 AM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, activist Yusril Koto’s red Hyundai Stargazer was attacked by two unidentified individuals outside his coffee shop in Grand BSI, Batam Center. CCTV footage shows one suspect, dressed in black and a blue jacket, slashing all four tires with a knife before fleeing on a motorcycle.
Suspects Remain Unknown
Although the perpetrators were captured on CCTV, they wore masks and hats, making identification difficult. “One stabbed my tires—it’s all recorded,” Yusril told the media on the same day. He filed a police report with Batam Kota Police shortly after the incident, urging law enforcement to apprehend those responsible.
Timing Raises Suspicion
The attack came just days after Yusril publicly accused several influential figures in Riau Islands Province of involvement in illegal cut and fill operations. The activist had recently confronted Batam Deputy Mayor Li Claudia Chandra during an unannounced inspection at Botania, demanding fair enforcement and transparency.
Heated Exchanges and Legal Pressure
Yusril’s statements in a viral video also sparked a backlash. He was reported to the Barelang Police by Akhmad Rosano, legal counsel for PT Karsa Adhitama Persada. The company claimed that Yusril’s remarks labeling a 105-hectare land development project in Bulang as illegal were defamatory and baseless.
Retaliation or Coincidence?
The report against him accused Yusril of spreading hoaxes and inciting unrest. Meanwhile, Yusril maintained his position, stating that the land project endangered local landowners and bypassed legal regulations. His supporters now fear the vandalism was retaliation for his vocal activism.
