Situr Wijaya’s untimely demise has raised alarms within the media community, highlighting the perils journalists face in Indonesia. The circumstances surrounding his death remain ambiguous, necessitating a comprehensive inquiry.

On the evening of April 4, 2025, hotel staff discovered Situr Wijaya unresponsive in his room at Hotel D’Paragon, Kebon Jeruk. Preliminary autopsy results indicated signs of a lung infection, potentially tuberculosis, as a contributing factor in Wijaya’s death. However, the presence of physical injuries has led to further examinations, including toxicology and histopathology tests, to ascertain any additional causes. The police have interviewed three hotel employees as witnesses, but as of now, no definitive conclusions have been reached.

Media Community’s Response

The Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) has expressed deep concern over Wijaya’s death, labeling it suspicious and demanding a thorough investigation. AJI’s chairperson, Nany Afrida, emphasized that such incidents exacerbate the already precarious situation for journalists in Indonesia, potentially hindering their ability to report freely and safely.

A Pattern of Threats

Wijaya’s death is not an isolated incident. In 2024, journalist Rico Sampurna perished in a suspicious fire, and Juwita, another journalist, was allegedly murdered by a military officer. These cases underscore a troubling pattern of threats and violence against media professionals in the country.

The mysterious death of Situr Wijaya serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by journalists in Indonesia. For Singaporeans and international observers, it highlights the critical need for safeguarding press freedom and ensuring the safety of media personnel globally. A transparent and thorough investigation into Wijaya’s death is imperative to uphold justice and deter future threats against the press.
