Emergency aid includes 124 tons of relief items and 35 medical personnel for earthquake victims

Indonesia has dispatched emergency humanitarian aid and a dedicated medical team to Myanmar following the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake that struck the country in late March 2025.

The earthquake that hit Myanmar on March 28 caused extensive damage in areas including Sagaing, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw, leaving thousands dead and injured. The Indonesian government responded swiftly with coordinated relief efforts in collaboration with ASEAN.

On April 3, 2025, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono officially flagged off 124 tons of emergency aid worth USD 1.2 million (approx. SGD 1.62 million) from Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base, Jakarta. The relief package included shelter equipment, medical supplies, and other essential goods, tailored to immediate needs identified through ASEAN coordination.

“This aid totals 124 tons in volume, with an estimated value of USD 1.2 million,” said Sugiono. He emphasized that the earthquake had already claimed 2,886 lives and injured over 4,600 people, with another 300 missing, amid ongoing security and political instability in Myanmar.

Complementing the relief goods, the Ministry of Health deployed a 35-member Emergency Medical Team (EMT) to assist in disaster-hit zones for one month. Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin confirmed the team carried medical equipment valued at IDR 5.5 billion (approx. SGD 445,500). “We hope our contribution brings meaningful help to the affected communities,” he added.

Led by BNPB and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the initiative also involved Indonesia’s national search and rescue agency (INASAR). Health Crisis Center representative Eko Medistianto noted that the team comprised various specialists including surgeons, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, and emergency personnel, along with pharmacists, nurses, midwives, and logistics staff.

The Indonesian Embassy in Myanmar reported no casualties among Indonesian citizens so far. Nonetheless, the government continues to monitor their safety while reinforcing its commitment to international solidarity and disaster support.

Indonesia’s rapid deployment of aid and medical expertise highlights its active role in regional disaster relief. The initiative demonstrates ASEAN’s cooperative capacity and serves as a reassuring gesture for neighboring nations navigating similar risks.
