Viral dashcam shows fatal impact as teen attempts to cross busy road in broad daylight

A 13-year-old girl tragically lost her life after being struck by a speeding lorry while attempting to cross the North-South Expressway in Johor.

The accident, which occurred on March 21 around 11 AM, happened at the 4.8-kilometre mark of the northbound North-South Expressway, involving a lorry en route from Johor Bahru to Kulai.

Dashcam footage that has since gone viral shows three individuals, including the victim, attempting to cross the expressway. The girl, walking slightly ahead, was hit by a lorry traveling at high speed and died on the spot. Her two companions were visibly shocked and remained standing after witnessing the fatal impact. The footage, uploaded to JB Breaking News, was blurry but enough to show the tragic sequence.

Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh, Chief of North Johor Bahru Police, confirmed that the victim was a 13-year-old Malaysian girl. Preliminary investigations revealed that she had suddenly entered the highway from the right, giving the 60-year-old lorry driver no time to react. The driver was uninjured, and the girl sustained severe head injuries, resulting in her immediate death at the scene.

The accident caused traffic to slow as passing drivers looked on, with many expressing concerns about pedestrian access and safety on highways. Police have classified the case under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers dangerous driving resulting in death and carries significant penalties.

Calls for Better Pedestrian Barriers and Education

Following the tragedy, community voices and road safety advocates have renewed calls for stricter pedestrian access control along major highways and more public education about the dangers of crossing such roads. Installing barriers, footbridges, or designated underpasses in high-risk areas could prevent future incidents.

The tragic incident highlights ongoing road safety challenges in Malaysia, especially regarding pedestrian behavior and highway access. As Johor remains a popular transit route for both locals and Singaporeans, incidents like this may prompt authorities to re-evaluate expressway safety protocols and improve infrastructure to avoid further loss of life.
