Indonesian Man Sentenced to Three Weeks’ Jail After Exposing Himself to SIA Crew Member During Flight
On January 23, 2025, during a flight from China to Singapore, Brilliant Angjaya, a business class passenger, consumed two glasses of champagne before falling asleep. Upon waking, he went to the toilet, where he decided to film himself exposing his genitals to an unsuspecting cabin crew member. After returning to his seat, Angjaya set his phone to recording mode and waited for the crew member to approach with an in-flight meal. Upon seeing the exposure, the crew member quickly reported the incident to her supervisor.
The victim reported the exposure immediately after noticing Angjaya’s mobile phone aimed at her. Upon investigation, Angjaya initially denied recording the incident. However, videos of the exposure were found on his phone, leading to his arrest upon the plane’s landing at Changi Airport. Angjaya was charged with one count of sexual exposure and pled guilty.
The prosecution recommended a sentence of four to six weeks, highlighting aggravating factors such as Angjaya’s intoxication, the public setting of the crime, and his attempt to record the incident. The defense, however, argued that the act was fleeting and posed minimal risk to other passengers. In his sentencing, District Judge Paul Quan acknowledged the moderate harm caused, noting the offense’s nature and the victim’s position as a public transport worker.

Angjaya expressed genuine remorse for his actions and cooperated fully during the investigation. He also wrote an apology letter to the victim, explaining his emotional distress due to his recent departure from studying in China. While the defense suggested the crime was an inappropriate prank, the judge emphasized the severity of Angjaya’s decision to expose himself and record the incident.
This case highlights the ongoing importance of upholding public decency and the rights of transport workers, especially in sensitive environments like airplanes. The Singapore court has taken a firm stance against indecent exposure, ensuring that such offenses are met with appropriate legal consequences. This case serves as a reminder of the legal and moral obligations individuals have in public spaces, particularly on flights, where the safety and comfort of others must be prioritized.
