27-Year-Old Man Hospitalized in ICU Following Domestic Dispute

A 27-year-old man is in critical condition after slashing his throat with a cleaver in front of a restaurant at a food court in Danga Bay, Johor Bahru. The incident, which occurred around midnight, is believed to have been triggered by a heated argument with his wife.

Johor Bahru Selatan police chief Raub Selamat confirmed that his team received a report about the incident at 12:25 AM.

“The victim is now in critical condition and is receiving treatment in the intensive care unit (ICU) at Sultanah Aminah Hospital,” he stated. He further urged the public to avoid spreading videos of the incident on social media, as it could lead to misinterpretation and unnecessary panic.

A 12-second video of the incident, captured by a bystander, went viral on social media platform X, showing the man pacing in front of a food counter, holding a meat cleaver to his neck. However, the footage did not capture what transpired next.According to witnesses at the scene, the man was seen visibly distressed and muttering to himself before the shocking act.

“He was walking back and forth in front of the restaurant, holding the cleaver. It was clear he was deeply troubled,” said a food court vendor, who wished to remain anonymous.

Mental Health Support and Awareness

Authorities remind the public that mental health resources are available for those facing emotional distress. Organizations such as Befrienders Malaysia, Talian Kasih (15999), and Mental Illness Awareness & Support Association (MIASA) offer 24/7 support to individuals in crisis.

Psychologist Dr. Nadia Hashim emphasized the importance of early intervention in emotional distress cases.

“Many individuals who go through extreme emotional distress often show signs beforehand. It is crucial for family and friends to recognize these signs and encourage seeking professional help before the situation escalates,” she said.Meanwhile, police encourage individuals with relevant information about the incident to contact the nearest station or the hotline at 07-218 2323.

Community Urged to Prioritize Mental Well-Being

As authorities continue their investigation, the incident highlights the importance of mental health awareness and crisis intervention. Public efforts to promote support systems and reduce stigma around emotional distress can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
