A 50-year-old Chinese national, Xu Yanyan, was sentenced to eight weeks in jail after assaulting a Singapore Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) officer. The incident occurred at Changi Airport when she was denied entry into the country and became aggressive.

Xu Yanyan arrived in Singapore from Hong Kong on February 13, 2025, but was issued a notice of refusal of entry. ICA officers arranged for her return flight on February 15, but Xu objected, demanding immediate repatriation. The situation escalated when she attacked a female ICA officer.

Rejected Entry Turns Violent At Changi Airport

Xu Yanyan, a Chinese national, faced a refusal of entry upon arrival at Changi Airport. Despite arrangements for a return flight on February 15, she persistently demanded to leave on the same day. Tensions escalated when she became physically aggressive towards a female ICA officer.

On the evening of February 13, a 34-year-old female officer was escorting Xu to another room when Xu suddenly punched her right shoulder and pinched her forearm. The attack caused significant pain, prompting a male ICA officer to call the police. The assaulted officer was later taken to Changi General Hospital, where she was diagnosed with bruises and given three days of medical leave.

Court Sentencing And Apology

Xu was charged with voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant and harassment. During the March 17 hearing, she pleaded guilty to one charge, leading to an eight-week jail sentence. Her lawyer stated that Xu, who had previously faced entry refusals in other countries, acted out of anxiety and confusion. Xu expressed deep regret for her actions and sincerely apologized to the ICA officer.

The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) emphasized its firm stance against any obstruction or harm toward its officers. A spokesperson stated that ICA officers play a crucial role in safeguarding Singapore’s borders and urged all travelers to comply with official instructions.

This incident highlights the challenges immigration officers face in enforcing border regulations. It also serves as a reminder for international travelers to remain compliant and respectful when dealing with immigration authorities to avoid legal consequences.
