Batam to Become a Modern Economic Hub Under the Integrated Economic Transmigration Zone

The Indonesian government has officially designated Batam as a Kawasan Ekonomi Transmigrasi Terintegrasi (KEET) Barelang, or Integrated Economic Transmigration Zone, marking a major step in its economic transformation. This initiative, announced by Minister of Transmigration Muhammad Iftitah Sulaimana Suryanegara, aims to turn Batam, Rempang, and Galang into a modern and sustainable economic hub.

KEET Barelang is designed to integrate transmigration settlements with economic activities, ensuring that relocated residents have access to jobs, businesses, and essential infrastructure. Minister Iftitah stated, “This project will transform the area into a modern transmigration zone that promotes inclusive and sustainable economic growth.” To support this vision, the government will implement five flagship programs: Transmigrasi Tuntas, Transmigrasi Lokal, Transmigrasi Patriot, Transmigrasi Karya Nasional, and Transmigrasi Gotong Royong, which focus on workforce development, local entrepreneurship, and infrastructure improvements.

During the Coordination Meeting on Local Transmigration, held at BP Batam’s office on March 18, 2025, the minister outlined the vision for KEET Barelang. “This initiative will turn the region into a modern transmigration center that fosters sustainable economic growth,” he stated. The government is implementing five flagship programs: Transmigrasi Tuntas, Transmigrasi Lokal, Transmigrasi Patriot, Transmigrasi Karya Nasional, and Transmigrasi Gotong Royong, all aimed at strengthening economic resilience and social integration.

As part of the event, land ownership certificates (SHM) were handed over to 68 residents of Rempang who have relocated to Tanjung Banon. Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) emphasized that this was a crucial step in ensuring legal certainty for the relocated residents. “This demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing a clear legal framework while advancing economic progress,” he stated.

With its modern infrastructure, strong government backing, and legal security for residents, KEET Barelang is poised to strengthen Batam’s position as a leading economic hub in Southeast Asia. The project is expected to enhance business opportunities, improve quality of life, and create long-term economic stability, making Batam a top destination for investors and skilled professionals alike.
