Significant budget raises public concerns over efficiency and necessity in waste management.

The Batam City Government has earmarked substantial funds for waste management personnel in 2025, prompting public scrutiny regarding the allocation’s effectiveness and necessity.

In February 2025, data from the System Information of General Procurement Plan (Sirup) revealed that the Batam City Government allocated IDR 26.2 billion (SGD 2.17 million) for driver and assistant services in waste management. This significant budget has raised questions among the public about its efficiency and urgency.

The allocated funds cover various personnel services, including drivers for dump trucks, pickup trucks, arm roll trucks, compactors, and their respective assistants. The public is questioning whether the need for such a large workforce is justified and how effectively these personnel manage Batam’s waste issues.

The government has also allocated IDR 10.2 billion (SGD 846,600) for purchasing six new waste collection vehicles, such as dump trucks and 6 m³ arm roll trucks. An additional IDR 4.8 billion (SGD 398,400) is designated for vehicle maintenance and fuel costs. These investments aim to enhance the efficiency of waste collection and address existing challenges in waste management.

Deputy Mayor of Batam, Li Claudia Candra, emphasized that waste management is a top priority for the city. However, the substantial budget allocation has led to public concerns about potential inefficiencies or excessive operational costs. Residents are questioning whether the funds are being managed effectively or if they are disproportionately high for operational needs.

The significant budget allocations for waste management in Batam highlight the city’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and improving waste management systems. However, the public’s concerns about the efficiency and necessity of such large expenditures suggest a need for transparent communication and assurance that the funds will be used effectively to enhance the city’s waste management infrastructure.
