Two suspects arrested at Hang Nadim Airport for attempting to smuggle methamphetamine to Lombok.

Authorities at Hang Nadim International Airport, Batam, foiled an attempted drug smuggling operation on March 2, 2025, after two passengers were caught hiding 400 grams of methamphetamine in their underwear. The suspects, ZK and IA, were preparing to board a flight to Lombok, but their suspicious behavior led to their arrest by the Indonesian police. The investigation is currently ongoing to determine their connections to larger drug networks.

The incident at Hang Nadim International Airport has sparked concerns about airport security and drug smuggling trends in Indonesia. Authorities are investigating whether the suspects were acting alone or as part of a larger syndicate. Drug smuggling remains a major issue in Indonesia, with traffickers frequently using transit points like Batam due to its proximity to Singapore and Malaysia.

Suspects Caught at Security Check

The arrest of ZK and IA was carried out by the Sub-Directorate II of the Riau Islands Police Narcotics Directorate, led by AKBP Gokmaulitae Sitompul. The operation was triggered by a tip-off from airport security officers, who suspected the men were attempting to smuggle illegal drugs.

The suspects initially passed the manual screening undetected, but metal detectors kept sounding alarms as they attempted to enter the departure area. This prompted authorities to conduct a more thorough search, leading to the discovery of two small packets of crystal meth hidden inside their underwear.

During a press conference, Kombes Anggoro Wicaksono of the Riau Islands Narcotics Division confirmed the total drug seizure at 400 grams, with each suspect carrying 200 grams of methamphetamine. The drugs were wrapped in plastic and secured within their modified undergarments, a technique that allowed them to initially bypass the X-ray screening.

Airport Security Under Scrutiny

Security at Hang Nadim Airport is now under review following the incident. Officials are evaluating whether stricter checks need to be implemented to prevent similar attempts in the future. The use of modified clothing to evade security checks has raised alarms, with authorities emphasizing the need for enhanced screening methods.

Under Indonesia’s strict narcotics laws, ZK and IA face the possibility of life imprisonment or even the death penalty if found guilty. Authorities are currently investigating their links to a larger trafficking network, as well as tracing the source of the methamphetamine. The suspects reportedly refused to disclose further details about their operations.

This incident at Hang Nadim International Airport serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug smuggling in Indonesia. With two suspects now in custody, police are intensifying their investigation to uncover broader networks involved in drug trafficking. The case has also sparked discussions on improving airport security measures, ensuring that traffickers cannot exploit weaknesses in screening systems.
