Singapore-based firm breaks ground on new data center campus, advancing Malaysia’s digital economy.
ST Telemedia Global Data Centres (STT GDC) has officially broken ground on its first data center in Johor, Malaysia. The new STT Johor 1 facility, located within the Nusa Cemerlang Industrial Park in Iskandar Puteri, is set to play a crucial role in strengthening Malaysia’s digital infrastructure. The project underscores the state’s rising prominence as a data center hub, with growing interest from global tech firms looking to expand operations beyond Singapore.
As Southeast Asia’s digital landscape continues to grow, Malaysia is emerging as a key player in data infrastructure development. The STT Johor data center marks a significant investment in Johor’s positioning as a digital economy powerhouse. With Singapore facing capacity constraints, global data center providers are turning to Johor as a strategic expansion site due to its proximity and connectivity advantages.
Transforming Johor into a Digital Hub
The STT Johor campus spans 22 acres and is designed to support up to 120 megawatts (MW) of IT load upon full completion. STT Johor 1, the first facility in the development, will provide 16MW of IT capacity and is expected to be fully operational by the end of 2026.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi emphasized the project’s impact on the region’s digital transformation. “This investment cements Johor’s role as a key destination for high-tech industries. It aligns with Malaysia’s vision to strengthen digital infrastructure and drive economic growth,” he said.
Located just 15 kilometers from Singapore, the data center will seamlessly integrate with STT GDC’s regional network, including its flagship STT Singapore 5 interconnection hub. The facility is also linked to STT Kuala Lumpur 1 and STT GDC’s other data center hubs in Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines via a Data Centre Interconnect (DCI) service.
Darryll Sinnappa, STT GDC Malaysia’s country head, highlighted the importance of this connectivity. “With STT Johor 1, we are strengthening the region’s digital backbone and enhancing cloud computing capabilities for businesses and government agencies alike,” he noted.
Sustainability and Innovation at the Core
In line with Malaysia’s commitment to green energy, STT Johor 1 will be powered by renewable and low-carbon energy sources. STT GDC is currently in discussions with several renewable energy providers to secure clean power for the facility. The initiative aims to achieve industry-leading energy efficiency while reducing the data center’s carbon footprint.
Additionally, the project includes a talent development initiative in collaboration with the Johor Talent Development Council (JTDC). This program will equip local professionals with the necessary skills to support the fast-growing data center sector, contributing to Malaysia’s long-term digital economy strategy.
Malaysia’s data center market is experiencing exponential growth, with an estimated development pipeline of 1.4GW planned over the next five years—a 264% increase from current capacity. This expansion is expected to generate RM3.6 billion in revenue by 2025, further positioning the country as a major digital infrastructure hub in Asia.
STT GDC’s investment is seen as a catalyst for further economic opportunities, particularly in job creation, technological advancements, and increased foreign direct investment in Malaysia’s digital sector.

The combination of advanced technology, sustainable energy solutions, and strong regional connectivity makes the project a significant step forward for the digital economy.
