65-Year-Old American Arrested in Phuket for Attempting to Smuggle Meth on Scoot Flight
A 65-year-old American woman was arrested at Phuket International Airport after Thai authorities discovered 4.3 kilograms of methamphetamine hidden in her luggage. The woman, identified as Melba Sharp from California, was preparing to board Scoot Airlines flight TR653 to Singapore when police intercepted her based on intelligence indicating possible drug smuggling. The arrest highlights ongoing concerns over international narcotics trafficking networks using Southeast Asia as a transit hub.
Drug smuggling cases involving international flights remain a serious challenge for law enforcement across Southeast Asia. Thailand, in particular, has been a known transit point for traffickers moving illicit substances across borders. The latest case, involving an elderly American woman allegedly attempting to transport methamphetamine from Phuket to Singapore and South Korea, underscores the sophisticated yet risky methods employed by smugglers.
Intercepted Before Departure
Thai authorities acted swiftly on a tip-off about an individual attempting to smuggle a significant quantity of methamphetamine through Phuket International Airport. A thorough passenger list review flagged Sharp as a high-risk traveler, leading to heightened surveillance.
At approximately 11:00 PM on February 23, 2025, officers from Sakhu Police Station, in coordination with airport security, conducted a baggage check as Sharp was checking in for her flight. Suspicion arose when officers noticed that the packaged bed sheets in her suitcase appeared heavier than expected. A closer inspection revealed four packages tightly wrapped in plastic and paper, later confirmed to contain methamphetamine.

Following the discovery, Sharp was immediately taken into custody and transported to Sakhu Police Station for further questioning. Initial investigations revealed that she was en route to South Korea, using Singapore as a transit point. Authorities suspect that she may have been working as a drug mule for a larger syndicate operating across multiple countries.
The Bangkok Post reported that Sharp remains under investigation, with police attempting to trace the origins of the drugs and identify any possible accomplices. Authorities are also examining whether the suspect had prior involvement in similar activities.
Law Enforcement’s Continued Crackdown
Thailand’s battle against drug trafficking has intensified in recent years, with authorities enhancing security measures at major international airports. The use of advanced surveillance techniques and intelligence-sharing agreements with neighboring countries has led to an increase in drug-related arrests.
Phuket, a popular tourist destination, has unfortunately also become a known transit route for drug traffickers. This arrest serves as a stark reminder of the risks and legal consequences associated with attempting to smuggle illicit substances through Thai borders.
Sharp’s arrest reinforces Thailand’s zero-tolerance policy on drug trafficking. Authorities continue to emphasize the severe consequences of carrying illegal substances, regardless of the offender’s nationality or background. The case is expected to lead to further investigations into trafficking routes and the networks operating within the region.
