Batam’s Kampung Aceh sheds its drug-laden past, embracing coffee tourism and economic hope.

In an unexpected yet inspiring twist, Kampung Aceh in Batam, once infamous for rampant drug activity, has been reborn as Kampung Madani Bersih Narkoba (Bersinar), a vibrant coffee tourism village. Spearheaded by Indonesia’s National Narcotics Agency (BNN RI), this initiative symbolizes resilience, transformation, and a brewing economic revival through coffee cultivation.

Kampung Aceh in Batam, Indonesia, was long synonymous with drug trafficking and addiction. Its dark reputation deterred development and stigmatized residents. Recognizing the need for radical change, BNN RI launched a bold initiative in July 2024, transforming the area into Kampung Madani Bersinar. With support from local authorities, businesses, and residents, the community has pivoted to coffee cultivation, offering a promising economic alternative and a new lease on life.

The program, named “Dunia Kopi Kampung Madani Bersinar,” not only aims to eradicate drug-related activities but also seeks to empower residents through sustainable livelihoods. This initiative highlights the potential of strategic collaborations in addressing social issues while fostering economic growth.

The transformation began with the government’s declaration of Muka Kuning as a drug-free zone in July 2024. Recognizing coffee as a valuable national commodity, BNN RI collaborated with local stakeholders, including Biznet, Panbil Industrial Estate, and Batamindo Industrial Park, to provide resources, training, and infrastructure for coffee cultivation and sales.

The launch of “Gerobak Dunia Kopi” a coffee cart entrepreneurship program, provided residents with the means to start their own coffee businesses. During the inauguration on February 13, 2025, BNN RI Chief Komjen Pol Marthinus Hukom handed over coffee carts to residents, emphasizing the importance of economic empowerment in the fight against drugs. This initiative aims to create a self-sufficient community while removing the financial allure of drug trafficking.

The shift from narcotics to coffee has not been without challenges. Years of stigma and systemic neglect posed significant hurdles. However, comprehensive rehabilitation programs and skill development workshops have played a crucial role. Residents are now trained in coffee brewing, marketing, and hospitality, turning Kampung Madani into a budding tourist destination.

This transformation also underscores the importance of public-private partnerships. Support from the private sector has ensured that residents receive quality training and resources. The collaboration between BNN RI, local government, and private enterprises has created a robust framework for sustainable development.

The impact is already visible. Tourism has surged, attracting coffee enthusiasts and curious visitors. The success of Kampung Madani offers a blueprint for other regions grappling with similar challenges. It proves that with collective effort, even the most troubled communities can find redemption and prosperity.

Batam’s Kampung Madani Bersinar stands as a testament to the power of community resilience, strategic interventions, and innovative economic solutions. For a region once marred by narcotics, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee now symbolizes hope, growth, and a brighter future. As the village continues to evolve, its story serves as an inspiring model for Indonesia and beyond.
