Visitor Arrivals and Revenue Surge as Sector Rebounds Beyond Pre-Pandemic Levels

Tourism spending in Singapore is projected to break its all-time record, surpassing the S$27.7 billion mark set in 2019, as the Singapore Tourism Board (STB) reports a robust rebound in visitor arrivals and spending across key sectors. With international travel demand surging, 2024 tourism receipts are expected to reach between S$27.5 billion and S$29 billion, driven by growth in entertainment, accommodation, and shopping.

Tourism Spending Surpasses S$22.4 Billion in First Nine Months of 2024

According to STB, all tourism expenditure categories have experienced strong growth, with Sightseeing, Entertainment & Gaming (SEG) leading at 25%, followed by Accommodation at 17%, and Food & Beverage and Shopping rising by 6% and 5%, respectively. The significant increase in spending underscores Singapore’s continued appeal as a leisure and business destination, attracting high-value tourists from key markets.

Mainland China, Indonesia, and Australia Lead Tourism Receipts

Singapore’s top three source markets for tourism spending were Mainland China (S$3.58 billion), Indonesia (S$2.13 billion), and Australia (S$1.44 billion), excluding gaming revenue. Visitor arrivals also reflected similar trends, with China (3.08 million), Indonesia (2.49 million), and India (1.2 million) contributing the highest numbers. Other key markets showing notable year-on-year growth included Japan, Taiwan, the UK, and the USA, aided by strong air connectivity and Singapore’s 30-day mutual visa exemption agreement with China.

Changi Airport Sees Near-Full Recovery with 41 Million International Seats

Singapore’s aviation sector has also rebounded strongly, with Changi Airport handling over 41 million international seats in 2024, representing a 15% increase from 2023 and achieving a 98% recovery to 2019 levels. Increased flight frequencies and expanding global routes have played a crucial role in Singapore’s growing visitor numbers, enabling a faster recovery compared to other regional travel hubs.

STB forecasts international visitor arrivals in 2025 to range between 17 million and 18.5 million, with expected tourism receipts projected between S$29 billion and S$30.5 billion. The outlook remains positive as Singapore strengthens its position as a premier travel destination, leveraging large-scale events, business conventions, and ongoing investments in tourism infrastructure.

With Singapore’s tourism industry exceeding pre-pandemic levels, the sector’s continued expansion offers significant economic benefits, including job creation, increased foreign exchange earnings, and business opportunities in hospitality and retail. For international visitors, the city’s growing travel accessibility, world-class entertainment, and visa-friendly policies make it an even more attractive destination. As Singapore pushes towards a record-breaking S$30 billion in tourism receipts by 2025, its tourism sector remains a key driver of economic growth, reinforcing its status as a leading global travel hub.
