A major fire broke out at four adjacent furniture shops in Bengkong Indah, Batam, early on February 5, 2025. The fire department received an emergency call at 6:45 AM, prompting the deployment of six fire trucks to the scene. Despite firefighters’ swift response, an elderly resident was unable to escape from the third floor of one of the burning buildings and tragically lost his life.
Firefighters discovered Tang Khe Lai’s body near a bathroom door on the third floor of one of the shops. Authorities believe he succumbed to smoke inhalation before rescuers could reach him. Heartbreakingly, reports indicate that he had called his son moments before his death, informing him about the fire but was unable to escape in time.

Firefighters from multiple stations, including Pos Sei Panas, Pos Duri Angkang, and Pos Batu Ampar, quickly arrived at the scene. Working together, they managed to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes and fully extinguished it by 7:15 AM. However, by the time the flames were subdued, the blaze had already caused severe structural damage to the shops.
The fire devastated all four furniture shops, resulting in substantial financial losses. While the exact damages have yet to be determined, preliminary estimates suggest losses could reach hundreds of millions of Indonesian Rupiah.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Forensic experts and Batam police are currently analyzing the scene to determine whether the blaze was sparked by an electrical malfunction, human negligence, or other potential factors.
Authorities have called on business owners and residents to adopt stricter fire safety measures, particularly in commercial areas prone to fire hazards. The tragedy underscores the critical need for functional fire alarms, clearly marked escape routes, and well-practiced emergency response plans to prevent similar incidents in the future.
