DPR Reviews Land Mafia Allegations Affecting Investment Climate in Batam

The demolition of Hotel Purajaya on June 21, 2023, despite ongoing legal proceedings, has fueled outrage. The hotel holds historical significance as one of Batam’s first establishments, symbolizing Malay heritage. According to Datuk Megat Rury Afriansyah, the demolition was executed without a court order, undermining legal due process.
Malay Community’s Call for Justice
Malay community representatives, including cultural figures Datuk Wira Maskur Tilawahyu and Said Andy, condemned BP Batam’s actions, describing them as discriminatory against indigenous Malays. They are calling for the reconstruction of Hotel Purajaya in its original Malay architectural style as a means of cultural preservation and restitution.
BP Batam’s Defense
BP Batam, represented by spokesperson Ariastuty Sirait, denied the allegations, stating that PT Dani Tasha Lestari failed to submit necessary documents, including a business plan and payment commitments, to extend their land allocation. BP Batam justified reallocating the land to PT Pasifik Estatindo Perkasa, citing adherence to regulatory standards.
DPR’s Commitment to Investigation
Commission VI, led by Anggia Ermarini and supported by Nurdin Halid, has vowed to conduct a thorough investigation into BP Batam’s land management practices. The DPR intends to summon BP Batam officials and representatives from seven other companies facing similar disputes to ensure transparency, legal accountability, and investor confidence in Batam’s land governance.
