25-year-old man arrested at Changi Airport for stealing a S$480 tie clip.
A 25-year-old Indian national was arrested at Changi Airport on January 28, suspected of shoplifting a S$480 tie clip from a retail shop in Terminal 2. The theft, which occurred on January 23, was uncovered through CCTV footage. Despite leaving Singapore shortly after the incident, the man was apprehended when he returned in transit. The stolen item was recovered from his possession.
The Singapore Police Force (SPF) was alerted to the theft on January 23, 2025, when a S$480 tie clip was reported missing from a shop in Terminal 2 at Changi Airport. Surveillance footage revealed the suspect slipping the item into his pocket before leaving without payment. Although he had already left Singapore, he was caught upon returning during transit on January 28.
Incident Uncovered Through Surveillance Footage
Police investigations revealed that the suspect had entered the store, browsed through items, and discreetly placed the tie clip in his left pocket. He left without making a purchase, and the theft was only discovered during routine checks by the store.
After the suspect’s identity was established, authorities tracked his movements. On January 28, he returned to Singapore while in transit at Changi Airport, where he was promptly arrested. The stolen tie clip was found in his possession.
The suspect is set to be charged in court on February 4, facing charges under Singapore’s Penal Code. If convicted of theft, he could face up to seven years in prison, a fine, or both. The Singapore Police Force emphasized its strict stance on shop theft, stating that offenders will be dealt with firmly.

Similar Theft Cases Highlight Ongoing Issue
This incident is not isolated. In December 2024, a 62-year-old woman from India was arrested for stealing perfume bottles and souvenirs worth over S$1,100. Earlier in the same month, a foreign couple was caught stealing 10 perfume bottles valued at S$2,600. These cases highlight the need for enhanced security measures at retail outlets within the airport.
The incident underscores the importance of vigilance in airport retail spaces, especially in busy transit areas. For travelers, this serves as a reminder of Singapore’s strict laws regarding theft, even for seemingly minor items. Airport authorities are expected to review security protocols to prevent similar occurrences.
This case highlights Singapore’s zero-tolerance policy towards crime, even in transit zones. It also reflects the country’s efficient law enforcement, capable of tracking and apprehending suspects across borders. Travelers should be aware of the severe legal consequences of theft, reinforcing Singapore’s reputation as one of the world’s safest airports.
