Veteran Singaporean actor Laurence Pang loses S$35,000 in an online dating scam involving a fraudulent e-commerce investment. His experience underscores the need for caution in online engagements.
In a disheartening turn of events, veteran Singaporean actor Laurence Pang, 78, fell victim to an online scam orchestrated by a woman he met on a dating site. The individual, known as “Mika,” deceived Pang into investing approximately S$35,000 (nearly 1.5 million pesos) into a fraudulent online business in the Philippines.
Pang encountered Mika on PinaLove, a platform catering to those seeking Filipina partners. Enticed by her charm and the prospect of companionship, Pang engaged in online conversations with her. Mika later persuaded him to invest in an e-commerce venture, promising lucrative returns. Trusting her assurances, Pang transferred funds to establish accounts for the purported business.

Initially, Pang believed he was reselling products on the reputable Japanese platform Rakuten. However, he soon realized that he had been directed to a counterfeit version of the site. When he attempted to withdraw his earnings, he was informed that outstanding orders prevented the transaction. Despite efforts to remove his products, new fictitious orders continued to appear, trapping his funds.
This incident highlights the pervasive issue of online scams, particularly those targeting individuals seeking relationships. Scammers often exploit dating platforms to build trust before introducing fraudulent investment opportunities. Common tactics include using fake profile pictures, professing quick affection, and fabricating financial hardships to solicit money.
Pang’s experience serves as a cautionary tale, emphasizing the importance of vigilance in online interactions. Users are advised to verify the authenticity of individuals they engage with and to be wary of unsolicited investment propositions. Conducting thorough research and seeking independent advice before committing funds can help prevent such fraudulent schemes.
