The Batam City Government launched a massive cleanup operation across nine mainland districts on January 8, 2025, successfully removing 20 tons of trash from illegal dumping sites. The effort, involving over a dozen vehicles and numerous officials, underscores the city’s commitment to maintaining cleanliness and improving public health.
Illegal dumping sites across Batam’s nine mainland districts had become a major concern, prompting the city government to act decisively. With over 20 tons of waste removed in a single day, the operation aimed to create a cleaner environment and mitigate health risks posed by unmanaged trash.
Cleanup Overview
The operation began early on January 8, 2025, involving officials, environmental teams, and vehicles equipped for waste collection. Locations such as Bengkong, Batam Kota, and Batu Ampar were prioritized for the removal of illegally dumped waste.

In Bengkong, officials cleared sites near SMP Negeri 4 Tanjung Buntung, deploying 16 pick-up trucks and two boats. Similarly, in Batam Kota, 10 vehicles were utilized to address waste near Simpang Kuda Sei Panas cemetery, while Batu Ampar saw cleanup efforts near the Bulog office.
Nongsa’s cleanup targeted areas near Hokie Punggur Kabil and SDN 11 Kabil, with seven operational vehicles. In Sungai Beduk, sites like Bukit Barelang and Puri Agung 4 were addressed using 12 pick-up trucks and five motorized carts.
Cleanup efforts extended to Lubuk Baja and Sekupang, where vehicles and motorized carts tackled waste buildup near DC Mall and Marina Tg Riau. Sagulung and Batu Aji districts also joined the initiative, collectively removing over three tons of waste each.

Legal Enforcement and Sustainability
Rudi Panjaitan, Head of Batam’s Communication Office, emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to addressing illegal waste through enforcement of local ordinances. Future cleanup drives will be supported by public awareness campaigns and stricter penalties for littering.
