Malaysia and Singapore to Forge Economic Ties Through Special Economic Zone Partnership
Malaysia and Singapore are set to sign the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (SEZ) Agreement on January 6, 2025, during the 11th Malaysia-Singapore Leaders’ Retreat. The collaboration aims to strengthen economic cooperation, boost trade, and enhance connectivity between the two nations.
The Leaders’ Retreat, postponed from December 2024 due to COVID-19, is scheduled for January 6-7, 2025, in Putrajaya. The event marks Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s first retreat since taking office in May 2024. Hosted by Malaysia’s Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, the retreat will include high-level discussions on economic, social, and environmental cooperation.
The Johor-Singapore SEZ agreement is central to this meeting, highlighting mutual efforts to foster growth in industries such as halal manufacturing, tourism, and urban development.

SEZ Agreement to Bolster Johor’s Economy
Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi emphasized the SEZ’s transformative impact on Johor’s economy, creating opportunities in key sectors like tourism and halal products. The agreement also aims to facilitate easier daily commuting for residents of Johor and Singapore.
Bilateral Agreements Across Diverse Domains
In addition to the SEZ, Malaysia and Singapore will sign agreements on:
– Education and social welfare
– Climate change and carbon capture
– Urban development
– Combating transnational crime
Prime Minister Wong confirmed that the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, scheduled for operation by the end of 2026, will significantly improve cross-border travel. Singapore’s redevelopment of Woodlands Checkpoint will further enhance long-term connectivity.
Despite political changes in Malaysia, bilateral trade and investment remain robust. In 2023, trade reached USD 92.1 billion (SGD 124.3 billion), with Singapore contributing USD 9.6 billion (SGD 12.96 billion) as Malaysia’s largest foreign investor.
