Relief in Kelantan and Terengganu, but Johor Braces for New Floods
Floodwaters are receding in Kelantan and Terengganu, with significant reductions in the number of evacuees across both states. However, heavy rain triggered new flooding in Johor, forcing families into shelters once more. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as water levels in some rivers remain high.
Malaysia has faced heavy rains and flooding over recent days, affecting Kelantan, Terengganu, and Johor. While the situation has improved in Kelantan and Terengganu, Johor has seen fresh rain, leading to new evacuations. Authorities remain vigilant, monitoring river water levels and weather forecasts.
Kelantan, one of the worst-hit states, reported a drop in evacuees from 882 in the morning to 623 by the afternoon of December 30, 2024. Most victims remain in relief centers in Tanah Merah and Kuala Krai. Despite the improvements, water levels in Sungai Golok exceeded the danger mark of 9.0 meters, requiring continued vigilance.

In Terengganu, the number of displaced persons decreased significantly, from 651 in the morning to 238 by late afternoon. These evacuees are primarily housed in Besut district. However, water levels in Sungai Telemong in Hulu Terengganu and Sungai Nerus in Setiu remain at warning levels.
Johor: New Floods and Rising Rivers
Johor faced fresh challenges as heavy rain hit areas like Kota Tinggi, Mersing, and Kluang. Relief centers opened in Dewan Kampung Baru Sungai Mas to accommodate 12 evacuees from Kampung Baru Sungai Mas. Rivers such as Sungai Ulu Pontian Besar in Kulai approached alert levels, adding to concerns.

State disaster management chairman Tan Sri Dr. Azmi Rohani reported mixed weather conditions across Johor. Mersing, Kluang, and Tangkak experienced rain, while other districts like Muar and Segamat were cloudy. Johor Bahru and Pontian enjoyed sunny weather, giving some respite to residents.
