Batam’s Revenue Agency introduces tax relaxation programs to recover outstanding taxes and boost local revenue.

The Batam Tax Agency (Bapenda) has collected approximately IDR 30 billion (SGD 2.49 million) in unpaid taxes by November 2024, thanks to an innovative tax relaxation program. This initiative aims to enhance the region’s revenue while easing the financial burden on taxpayers.

Batam’s Revenue Agency has been working on improving the city’s financial health by addressing outstanding tax arrears. Since the delegation of property tax responsibilities from the central government in 2012, the agency has been using updated strategies, including relaxation programs, to encourage compliance among taxpayers.

Bapenda Batam has collected IDR 30 billion (SGD 2.49 million) in unpaid taxes so far this year. This marks a significant milestone in the agency’s effort to meet its annual target of IDR 50 billion (SGD 4.15 million) in arrears collection.

The relaxation program, introduced earlier this year, allows taxpayers to settle their debts with reduced penalties. By offering tax amnesty and discounts, this initiative has proven to be a valuable tool in motivating taxpayers to fulfill their obligations.

March 2024 saw a record-breaking collection of IDR 59 billion (SGD 4.89 million), driven by strong participation in the relaxation program’s first phase. The program has also helped generate additional revenue during special events, such as Batam’s 195th-anniversary celebrations, which raised another IDR 45 billion (SGD 3.73 million).

During December alone, the agency collected IDR 9.4 billion (SGD 780,000) through the relaxation program. This included IDR 7.2 billion (SGD 600,000) from unpaid taxes and IDR 2.2 billion (SGD 182,000) from current tax dues.

The program has been widely welcomed by taxpayers, leading to significant improvements in overall compliance. Officials are urging the public to continue paying taxes on time to further enhance the region’s financial stability.

The success of the tax relaxation program demonstrates the effectiveness of flexible policies in boosting local revenue while easing taxpayers’ financial burdens. For Singaporeans and international businesses, Batam’s improved fiscal environment highlights its growing potential as a thriving economic hub.
