Known as “blue carbon” ecosystems, mangroves sequester carbon up to ten times more efficiently than terrestrial forests.

In Batam, Indonesia, mangroves cover significant areas and play a crucial role in protecting its coastlines and supporting local communities. Despite rapid urbanization and industrial development, Batam’s mangroves continue to shield the island from erosion and provide livelihoods to local fishermen. However, pressures from land reclamation and pollution threaten these ecosystems.

 

Several initiatives, such as mangrove reforestation projects by the Tanjung Uma Empowerment Program and government efforts, aim to restore degraded areas and raise awareness about their importance. As part of the Riau Archipelago, Batam’s mangroves contribute to regional biodiversity and carbon sequestration, highlighting their global importance.

 

The Threats Mangroves Face

Despite their value, mangroves are disappearing at an alarming rate. Over the past 50 years, 35% of global mangroves have been lost, primarily due to:

  • Coastal development and urbanization
  • Agriculture and aquaculture, especially shrimp farming
  • Pollution and climate change impacts

 

The loss of mangroves leads to a double climate threat—not only does it release stored carbon into the atmosphere, but it also eliminates a critical buffer against climate impacts.

 

How to Protect Mangroves and Amplify Their Role in Climate Action

1. Conservation and Restoration

Protecting existing mangroves and reforesting degraded areas are essential steps. Countries like Indonesia are participating in global efforts, such as the Mangrove for the Future initiative, which aims to restore mangroves and enhance community resilience.

 

2. Policy Support

Governments need to integrate mangroves into national climate strategies. For example, Indonesia has included mangroves in its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement.

 

3. Community Engagement

Empowering local communities through education, sustainable livelihoods, and ecotourism ensures long-term conservation.

 

4. Corporate Responsibility

Industries operating near mangroves must adopt sustainable practices to minimize environmental impact.
