RTS Link to ease congestion, enabling faster, efficient travel between Johor Bahru and Singapore.
The long-awaited Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link is on track to transform cross-border travel by December 2026. With over 90% of construction completed on Malaysia’s side and 80% in Singapore, the project aims to cut travel time between the two cities to just five minutes, easing congestion for hundreds of thousands of commuters.
For decades, the Johor-Singapore Causeway has been plagued by severe congestion, with commuters facing wait times of up to three hours. The RTS Link, a joint project costing RM10 billion (approximately S$3 billion), promises to address these challenges, enabling efficient, high-capacity transport for 10,000 passengers per hour in each direction.
Significant Progress on Both Sides
Construction has made remarkable strides, with MRT Corporation reporting that Malaysia’s infrastructure—including the Bukit Chagar Station and Wadi Hana Depot—is 93% complete. Meanwhile, 80% of Singapore’s viaducts and related infrastructure are finished. The Woodlands North Station, integrated into Singapore’s MRT network, is expected to be ready by 2025.

Reducing Congestion for Commuters
The RTS Link will drastically reduce travel time between Johor Bahru and Singapore to just five minutes. With the capacity to accommodate 10,000 passengers per hour in both directions, the rail system aims to alleviate the traffic bottleneck on the Causeway, which sees over 300,000 daily crossings.
Symbol of Bilateral Unity
A key design feature of the RTS Link is the “clasping hands” viaduct, symbolizing the close ties between Malaysia and Singapore. The structure reflects a shared commitment to enhancing regional connectivity and fostering bilateral collaboration in infrastructure development.
Overcoming Delays and Challenges
Initially slated for completion in 2020, the RTS project faced delays due to Malaysia’s project reviews in 2019 and further disruptions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Construction resumed in late 2020, and by October 2023, the project had surpassed the 50% completion milestone, marking a steady path toward its 2026 launch.

Enhanced Regional Mobility and Economic Impact
The RTS Link’s seamless integration with Singapore’s MRT network and Johor’s public transport system is expected to boost economic activities in both cities. By improving connectivity, the project supports regional growth, making it easier for businesses and tourists to traverse the two hubs efficiently.
The RTS Link represents a transformative shift in cross-border travel. The reduction in travel time to five minutes eliminates the inconvenience of lengthy commutes, offering a streamlined alternative for both leisure and business trips.
The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link, set to complete by 2026, will cut travel time between the two cities to just five minutes. With over 90% of Malaysian and 80% of Singaporean infrastructure completed, the project promises to ease congestion, accommodate 10,000 passengers per hour, and redefine regional connectivity.
